Ok, so my poll (https://wandering.shop/@gannet/102068534269419630) and its replies suggest that there’s interest in some sort of monthly yarncraft theme. About half the votes were for “well, it depends,” which makes sense really.

Anyway, within this thread lies a vague proposal, open to changes and modifications. And of course we can change things as we go along!

The most important thing, I think, is to not be craft-specific, aside from limiting this to #FiberArts #FibreArts.

Please boost! More details below.

I wasn’t around for #yarnuary this year, so I don’t know what y’all got up to. Would anyone using the #knitting #crochet #FiberArts #FibreArts tags be up for some kind of low-key monthly theme? Boost, please! [ ] Yes [ ] Well, it depends [ ] No

The first thing is to figure out how to choose themes. I mean, I don’t want to be in charge of anything! I’m happy to suggest themes as we go, and take suggestions for themes, and maybe keep a list to use with a random number generator or something. If people don’t mind, that is. Or maybe we can pass the responsibility around or something.

Just remembered to make the rest of the thread unlisted, hah.

Here’s some ideas for the kind of monthly themes I have in mind:

- finishing those things that have been shoved in a bag or closet but only need a little bit of work to finish them

- learning a new technique, whether it’s entirely or mostly new to you, or a technique you’ve never tried for a craft you know already (for instance, cable knitting or cable crochet)

- choosing color combinations

- mending things to make them usable

How it would work: the theme would be usually be suggested in the middle of the previous month (in case you need supplies). And then during that month, we’d post about our progress, ask questions, share photos, and use the hashtag to make it possible to find each other’s stuff.

Speaking of which, what about #MonthlyYarns or #TellingYarns or #MonthlyMaking or #Makery or? Suggestions?

This is as far as I’ve gotten in my thinking. What do you all think?

I’m not getting a huge number of definite yes responses to this thread - there’s more people saying they want to watch a monthly yarncraft themed hashtag than join in, which is fine! We all have lots of commitments.

I’m seeing positive responses to both #YarnTales and #Makery. Can people help me pick one of those two? My personal inclination is the former, as it’s more obviously fibery. Makery has a broader scope (ceramics, for example.)

My current proposal is this: how would it be to just go ahead and arbitrarily start in June with a theme of either mending or finishing existing projects?

(Ulterior motive: I have lots of unfinished projects lurking in bags, and other things that need mending.)

I think that will give us more time to pick a theme for July and a way to run this more effectively.

@gannet ooooh I need some incentive to mend.
@mcmoots let us mend things together!
@gannet I have SUCH a pile of mending!

@gannet I'm in for the idea of going with a "mend together" - especially as my own "basket" has at the very top a project delayed through my having picked up a nasty cold.

I will definitely be of the "dipping in and out" sort, but you give a positive recognition to that, so thank you!

#YarnTales gets my preference. Would we also enjoy a #MendTogether as well?

@gannet Mending and finishing with a start in June sound both good, because most of us have both on their list and no big preparation is needed.

Personally I'm very interested in learning (visible) mending techniques

@gannet I've got a project I need to finish... and twenty I need to start. A whole bag of yarn and patterns from a yarn crawl a year ago.
@gannet I love the idea and I'll be in, although more sporadically than consistently. Also I like your ideas about how to let responsibilities wander. And I also like # tellingyarn, because it contains a lot of what is planned and because it's specific
@gannet * yarntales I meant of course, not tellingyarn (:
@Johannab @gannet reminds me of weaving in ends, but that's not a negative association for me
@Johannab @gannet also, importantly, I prefer YarnTales out of those 2
@gannet i'm not the best at participating in things but this sounds really fun!
@ebeth I’m glad it sounds like fun! I’m not always good at it either, but I had fun with Yarnuary two winters ago, so I think I can make it work. And you can always follow the hashtag and join in the conversation, if you’d like!

@gannet i still haven't even finished the masto KAL but i really enjoyed that

maybe the "finish an old project" theme would be my inspiration to finish that lol

@gannet Sounds good! I'd love to follow along, as I'm a slow knitter and try to do one thing at a time (and I'm in the midst of a major shawl project).
@gannet I like #TellingYarns... I'm not good at keeping up with these things, but following along would be fun!
