Calling all #Fediverse admins of instances in the #EU. The #CopyrightDirective is coming, we need to show the MEPs how massively the EU Internets will be affected.

We are preparing a list of all EU-based #Pleroma, #Mastodon, #GNUSocial, #Peertube, #Funkwhale, and any other instances.

Please *contact me*. All I need is the domain name, which EU Member State it's located in, and the rough topic of the instance. Approximate user count welcome, but not necessary.

Please help. This is important.

If someone can translate this into any other #EU language, please do, and send forth. I will boost. We need this to go as far and wide as possible.

Thank you all.

The additional thing is that #Fediverse might get a visibility boost (yeah, I said it) from the Europarliament, since we might get featured in a debate at some point.

It does not matter if your instance is small. It does not matter if your instance is not run for profit.

You *will* be affected by the #CopyrightDirective.

Your instance being on this list will help us make that point.

#Fediverse

@rysiek my instance is a single user and is located in Germany. No particular topics.
@rysiek Single User, Germany, topic everything/personal use.
@rysiek in what way not-for-profit or small instances are affected by current state of legislation?
@rysiek how many fediverse instances are run for profit?

@lain doesn't matter. The Directive will affect everything. And even if there are some exceptions, they will be artificial and eventually dismantled.

We either stop it now, or we get stuck with it.

@rysiek "for profit-making purposes"
Screenshot_2019-02-12 Mandate R…

@lain ah nice. Problem with that, of course, is that "profit-making purposes" is so wide that it's almost irrelevant.

I mean, yeah, private instances will not fall under that. But as soon as you accept any donations...

@rysiek i mean, yes, i think it's a bad idea and an unworkable law, but i don't see how it applies to the vast majority of fediverse instances
@lain @rysiek Mine. My users pay for all my bills.
@guizzy @rysiek did your valentine's day date type this out for you?
@lain @rysiek Yes, I indeed typed it with my hands.

@rysiek Do we just message you here or do you prefer somewhere else?

If here:

icosahedron.website, netherlands [server] and germany [admin contact / owner], nominally 800 users but practically about 100 daily active, topic is generalistic

@rysiek My instance (mastodon.lt) is located in Lithuania. Need help translating text to Lithuanian?

@gytis always. :)

Thank you, instance added.

@rysiek If someone has time they could do a script by using data from here: https://the-federation.info/ - fetch the IP, check if in EU and then sum the domains+users. I could try tomorrow but I guess time running out...

@rysiek Data is as #GraphQL if someone is interested to do it: https://the-federation.info/graphql
@rysiek oh, IP is already in the dataset, just needs country location. I've yet to find something that doesn't rate limit and ban me :/
@jaywink MaxMind provides geoip-databases and language-bindings for free, at https://github.com/maxmind.
@rysiek
@tastytea @rysiek thanks will check that!
@tastytea TBH I did prefer an online API that would not require installing and updating databases, have used maxmind I think a long time ago and it needed frequent updating to be somewhat reliable. Trouble is, I've got myself banned from all the free online services I've tried :D So Maxmind it is I guess.
@jaywink Just put the updater in a cron job and forget about it?

@tastytea @jaywink any luck? I am manually adding instances for the time being, but some automation would be great (but I can't handle everything ;) ).

@rysiek @tastytea Countries are now in the dataset! Also shown in the lists on the site. Unfortunately the big list of all nodes dies due to... the amount of nodes.

I'll work on a dedicated page to provide the data, will ping you today or tomorrow 👍

@jaywink we have time. It's a question of weeks, not hours.

If you can do that this will be super useful! Info on software running would potentially be helpful too.

@rysiek Cool, for sure I can! I thought there was a vote very soon coming days. I've been meaning to get the country info sorted there anyway :D
@jaywink yup. But the sooner we get the data, the better we can prepare

@rysiek Sorry I've had so many things going on all I've managed to do is this: https://the-federation.info/hostingreport

I was aiming for a filterable table, I'll try make it better tomorrow and get some "EU" related total counts...

Ideas welcome. Also maybe thinking of putting some text about article 13 there.

@rysiek so, slightly better now, data aggregation moved to database (loads fast) and sorting added. I'll try add some #EU specific counts tomorrow. Any particular wishes on how to show/list the data?

I was kind of surprised #France has so many #Fediverse servers 🤔

@rysiek @jaywink I thought the Parlament is waving it through this week
