#YouTubeMusicGems OK this is amazing. I had to look it up. This is Rebbie Jackson, a younger Jackson sibling, in the #music #video for the title track of her 1984 debut album "Centipede." It features Rebbie as a shape-shifting sorceress who has been trapped in a painting, lines of faceless men in tuxedos with red bow ties, lots of lightning, and a centipede. I don't know why. It's marvelous.

I was a small child during the 80s, and my parents listened almost exclusively to super folky music. So I'm learning about 80s pop music as an adult. I really love so much about it, the colors, the absurdist whimsy, and there's definitely parallels between Reagan's time & 45's. Anyway here's a band I just heard of this year: Wang Chung. Sofia Coppola must have seen this (vis: anachronistic juxtop. of contemporary music w/ Louis XVI fashions) 2. it's quaint to think her hints at oral sex were daring at the time 3. She super stole everything about this from Black queer folx & this performance, even tho there are Black performers, erases its origins even more.

This video is incredible because now - having learned more about Tina's personal timeline - I see this is after Tina broke free but before she made it big. It's Rod Stewart's show. He's as high as a thermospheric satellite, and she's being carefully professional as she dances around letting him peer up her skirt as he slumps on the stage between numbers. Not one to watch for the performance but for the historical insight
Compare and contrast to this performance nearly 30 years later - Tina is having the time of her life and so is everyone there. They're all riding the organic high of joy and excellence that comes from genuine enjoyment of one's own excellence onstage. Truly a beautiful moment, especially if you like pretty ladies dancing sexy. And the song is funny, and new to me. #music #misandry #YouTubeMusicGems

@christiemalry when I heard the song the first time I thought they were saying "Everybody wing chun tonight" as in the kung fu school and it was confusing. But in a good way.
Demonkind@SallyStrange weird bit of trivia stuck in my head from back then: Wang Chung explained that their name is the sound of a guitar in standard tuning when you strum upward across all strings and then strum downward.
