It's been an eventful lovely day full of delicious food and strong emotions. Now we're home and waiting for dinner to be done and it's time to introduce you to Spouse's #YouTubeMusicGems. See, they've made me a hypocrite with regards to my my hate of #YouTube. Spouse is an absolute genius at finding beautiful performances & music videos on YouTube. Today on our 1 year anniversary they found this: Mary J. Blige and Chaka Khan performing "Sweet Thing" together.

#NowPlaying One thing I enjoyed about this Jackson 5 #music #video of "Blame It On The Boogie" is how it managed to offer a premonition of laggy web video play before the internet existed #YouTubeMusicGems

#YouTubeMusicGems OK this is amazing. I had to look it up. This is Rebbie Jackson, a younger Jackson sibling, in the #music #video for the title track of her 1984 debut album "Centipede." It features Rebbie as a shape-shifting sorceress who has been trapped in a painting, lines of faceless men in tuxedos with red bow ties, lots of lightning, and a centipede. I don't know why. It's marvelous.

Michael is singing backup.

I did not know that Liza Minelli did a performance of "Single Ladies" in Sex & the City 2 (on account of I didn't see it). What is happening #YouTubeMusicGems

Luciano Pavarotti did a bunch of wild collaborations back in the day, e.g. This mash-up of "It's A Man's World" and some Italian song with James Brown. I was pretty relieved that Luciano didn't try to sing "It's a man's world" in his thick accent.

I'm just going to throw a few hashtags in here bc I forgot and some I debated, like, for Barrington Levy: #dancehall because he's that as well as #reggae, and #dub for that Sugar Minott track. All kinds of music. Classic #SoulMusic. These are Spouse's #YouTubeMusicGems and there are a few themes: besides these, #OldHollywood (Ethel Merman, Judy Garland) and 80s & 90s #HipHop.

ALSO THE NAME OF THE SONG IS "BLACK ROSES"

Look I had a long day. I went to 3 work sites, drove an hour to get to one of them. It was dark when I left and dark when I got home and now I'm blazed.

I was a small child during the 80s, and my parents listened almost exclusively to super folky music. So I'm learning about 80s pop music as an adult. I really love so much about it, the colors, the absurdist whimsy, and there's definitely parallels between Reagan's time & 45's. Anyway here's a band I just heard of this year: Wang Chung. They're English. This is "Dance Hall Days." #ProblematicFaves #Music

Wang Chung - Dance Hall Days

YouTube

Take your baby by the hand
And make her do a high handstand
And take your baby by the heel
And do the next thing that you feel

We were so in phase
In our dance hall days
We were cool on craze
When I, and you, and everyone we knew
Could believe, do, and share in what was true

Dance hall days love !

Take your baby by the hair
And pull her close and there, there, there
And take your baby by the ears
And play upon her darkest fear

Wang Chung - Dance Hall Days

YouTube
Wang Chung the band. Wikipedia says they are "new wave", which is a thing I'm still trying to sort out, and that "Wang Chung means 'yellow bell' in Chinese, and is the first note in the Chinese classical music scale." "Dance Hall Days" is on the GTA Vice City soundtrack. But I first heard "Everybody Have Fun Tonight" listening to Delhi NY's only radio station, which is pretty good. 97.5 if you're ever driven thru. #YouTubeMusicGems #music #NowPlaying #80s https://youtu.be/BoXu6QmxpJE

"Everybody Have Fun Tonight" by Wang Chung got to no. 2 on the charts in 1987, but to be fair the no. 1 song while they were at no. 2 was "Walk Like an Egyptian" by the Bangles which is objectively cooler. Notable in the video: early use of video editing to make it seem as if Princess Diana & Muammar Gaddafi are doing the dance. #YouTubeMusicGems #NowPlaying #Music #80s

Let's talk about this #YouTubeMusicGems 1990 MTV VMA performance by Madonna of "Vogue". 1. Sofia Coppola must have seen this (vis: anachronistic juxtop. of contemporary music w/ Louis XVI fashions) 2. it's quaint to think her hints at oral sex were daring at the time 3. She super stole everything about this from Black queer folx & this performance, even tho there are Black performers, erases its origins even more.

It's time for #YouTubeMusicGems! Queer vibes on Soul Train! Spouse & I were speculating that by 1982, the numerous queer dancers were like "Hey without us you wouldn't have this show" bc you definitely don't see such overt flamboyance in the 70s. #SoulMusic #80s #NowPlaying

Located, by chance, the very last moments of old USA: Michael Jackson performing "Billie Jean" in front of delirious fans at Madison Square Garden, Manhattan NY Sept. 10, 2001

At the time, people complained because it seemed like MJ was high. Jermaine Jackson claims he had a meeting at the WTC the next morning & overslept & missed it. Anyway, it's A Moment in History #FolkHistory #music #performance #pop #2001

Calypso Rose! Listen up fuckos! She is the queen of #calypso and #soca #music. From Tobago, she started singing professionally when she was a 15 year old girl. Now she's in her 80s & basically the last one standing from her musical cohort. Here she is being cheeky & sassy in the 80s (shocking some of the audience a bit I think).

Calypso Rose! She's amazing! Her latest album is from 2016, when she was 76. This song, Calypso Queen, is basically her flexing on everyone else in the business:

"They say that I reign too long
Forgetting that mi constitution is strong
Instead of respecting mi long long reign,
They making plot to take down mi name"

You may have heard about how the anti-disco music "movement" was in fact a racist & sexist backlash against the popularity of a genre where many stars were Black & queer - case in point, Sylvester, "flamboyant king--and queen!--of disco." Here in 1978 with Two Tons of Fun, taking the crowd to church with "Disco Heat" #disco #70s #gospel #music

Sylvester - Disco Heat - 1978 (By Lázaro)

I know nothing of 70s television or else I'd probably know who these white people are... Anyway, in their introduction of Sylvester, they place them alongside the Village People and Grace Jones as people who will become "legends" and nostalgic avatars of the #disco #music just as Elvis Presley & Little Richard are for rock.

This video is incredible because now - having learned more about Tina's personal timeline - I see this is after Tina broke free but before she made it big. It's Rod Stewart's show. He's as high as a thermospheric satellite, and she's being carefully professional as she dances around letting him peer up her skirt as he slumps on the stage between numbers. Not one to watch for the performance but for the historical insight

https://youtu.be/dlxK8IhZ8vo

Compare and contrast to this performance nearly 30 years later - Tina is having the time of her life and so is everyone there. They're all riding the organic high of joy and excellence that comes from genuine enjoyment of one's own excellence onstage. Truly a beautiful moment, especially if you like pretty ladies dancing sexy. And the song is funny, and new to me. #music #misandry #YouTubeMusicGems

@SallyStrange Wow. That was certainly /something/.. =:P

(And indeed, not exactly the pinnacle of either's abilities)

@porsupah I want to write a murder mystery novel series where the detective is one of Tina's dancers and they solve a mystery at every location they're on tour. I bet they saw some shit

@SallyStrange I'd watch /that/ anime. ^_^

(Seriously, that could be a *fun* premise!)

@SallyStrange I had not heard that theory before, but it makes so much sense out of my high school years. I graduated in 1981, the only senior who listened to Gary Numan.

@WanderingBeekeeper

"Disco Demolition Night" certainly aroused racist & queerphobic passions, even NPR wrote about it

@SallyStrange I hadn't heard about this event. Thanks for the link.
@WanderingBeekeeper yeah, no problem. Spread the word! History is being erased even now. 💜 (not being dramatic, it's just the truth)
@SallyStrange new wave was just a catch all term for post punk i think the real world only used it for a week in 1977 but the newspapers picked it up and described anything they couldn't readily identify, (which being run by old gits born in the 20's was most things) in the '80's as new wave, so the line translates as '' everyone yellow bell tonight'' interesting, i always wondered
@christiemalry when I heard the song the first time I thought they were saying "Everybody wing chun tonight" as in the kung fu school and it was confusing. But in a good way.
@SallyStrange weird bit of trivia stuck in my head from back then: Wang Chung explained that their name is the sound of a guitar in standard tuning when you strum upward across all strings and then strum downward.
@demonkind huh, that's fun. What a trip.
