New seeds means a fresh admixture of DNA from one of a few survivors of these ancient trees, which is different from plants grown from a cutting (ie: a genetic clone).

The #Wollemi #pine was thought to have gone extinct 2 million years ago until it was rediscovered in #australia by a group of hikers in 1994. Now, scientists have decoded its #genome to understand how it's survived — almost unchanged — since the time of the #dinosaurs. #greatRead

They grow up so fast 🥹

(#Wollemi “pine” boy-cone - the tree isn’t even 1 m tall yet #Wollemia)

I came across this while searching tree types, I was blown away to think there is only one wild valley in the world with Wollemi trees. The last living remnants of a Jurasic era species of Pine.

I believe they are trying to repopulate the species around the world.

Wollemi Wollemi National Park is home to many unique species, including the last wild stands of the Wollemi pine. It has a long past, make sure it has a living future. A culturally significant place for the Wiradjuri, Dharug, Wanaruah and Darkinjung people, Wollemi and the massive World Heritage…

A Wollemi Pine as a Bonsai enjoying some winter morning sunshine. It's winter caps are just about to burst out & spring growth to follow. #AustralianNativeBonsai #Bonsai #Wollemi
Today I planted two #Wollemi pines (#Wollemia nobilis) I have grown from seed in the ground. A good day 🌲🌲🌲🌲🌲🌲
@sarahdurrant looks so healthy! Mine is not thriving at all - about ten years old - from nursery at Botanic Gardens - and we’re only about 100k from the secret #Wollemi valley. Suspect pine cones are last ditch reproductive effort.
I grow #Wollemi pines - Wollemia nobilis - from seeds. #Wollemia is an ancient survivor, a member of the #Araucariaceae family (so not actually a pine), and critically endangered in the wild. I'll soon bring these ones indoors to protect them from frost. #WollemiPine #WollemiaWednesday
