When a female Wollemia cone matures, it disintegrates. The scales which bear the seeds fall apart in an extremely pleasing manner. This cone is about 5cm across and has split more or less in the middle of its length. You can see a seed still attached at the top at 11-12 o'clock.

I grow #Wollemi pines - Wollemia nobilis - from seeds. #Wollemia is an ancient survivor, a member of the #Araucariaceae family (so not actually a pine), and critically endangered in the wild. I'll soon bring these ones indoors to protect them from frost. #WollemiPine #WollemiaWednesday
