Where is the best write-up(s) of the GCC/EGCS fork? Causes, effects, lessons learnt, etc.
I was strictly watching from the sidelines but it did feel stressful at the time.

A good write-up by Mia Sato in The Verge about what's been going on on #Wikipedia the past week. https://www.theverge.com/report/939442/wikipedia-editors-protest-wikimedia-layoffs-strike
As of this post, the petition of editors willing to go on strike is at 737 signatures. This makes it the 3rd-most supported petition or proposal in English Wikipedia history. Combined, signatories have made >10,000,000 edits and written ~42,000 articles, including >1,200 recognized as "good" or "featured".

More than twenty years ago I was recruited from #everything2 to #wikipedia because #en.wiki was clearly building the better encyclopedia.
>300k edits later, if a better encyclopedia rises from the ashes that #WMF appears intent on leaving, I'm more than happy to be recruited.
"better" can have a lot of dimensions, some of them prima facie mutually exclusive; it doesn't have to be perfect.
"If [WikiMedia Foundation] breaks the union, or just lets the firings stand and waits for the news cycle to drift, the signal sent to every other mission-driven tech organization is that values rhetoric is decoupled from values practice. Every nonprofit pulling in donations on language about community, transparency, and equity gets permission to keep that language on the website while the staff handbook reads like Amazon’s."

It's going to be an unusual #BrookeVibberDay this year.
and the #Wikimedia foundation knows about it and does nothing. in fact in the case of HrWiki, one of the aforementioned "Hitler was a good guy" Wikipedias, the foundation deliberately chose not to act *for years*, according to *their own admission*.
Was zum... ?

The #WikiMediaFoundation #WMF has fired 6 employees (5 engineers + 1 manager); there is concern that this is #UnionBusting against #WikiWorkersUnited #WWU, the WMF employees' union.
