"It was scary that without consulting could just decide that they're taking something quite significant from our lives and how we cope with our lives.

"We relied on that respite."

'We're just meant to say thank you': Goverment u-turns on disability funding

The minister has wound back controversial cuts to disability support services made two years ago.

Waiting...

Disability Support Services in limbo.

Nick's Kōrero

Currently working on some cartoons and infographics about the recent awfulness by the coalition government.

The message is clear. Those in charge don't believe our community is capable of looking after itself, making decisions for itself or using the resources supplied in a 'correct manner' or on goods that they approve of.

This should be their new strap line for the Ministry.

Perhaps the cruelest and most woeful action (amongst so many) of this utterly awful gvt is the gutting of #Whaikaha. Our disability community are amongst the most vulnerable in the nation and they waited long for their own ministry that could understand and respond to their particular needs. I'm heartbroken by this #nzpol

I've been dwelling on the term Tangata Whaikaha. For those of you not familiar, it is a Te Reo Māori term for disabled people that translates, roughly, as "strong people". It is a beautiful and enabling term embraced by disabled people.

The effort by the government to remove this name from Whaikaha, the Ministry of Disabled People, is steeped in ignorance, racism, and a lack of respect.

Care workers the invisible modern slaves of the state

Opinion: They don’t fit the profile of exploited cult workers, immigrants or refugees but caregivers are underpaid or not paid at all by a system that saves the state well over $200,000 a year for every person they care for, writes Jane Carrigan

"Then on Tuesday morning, Willis confirmed Cabinet had asked for more oversight of decisions being made by Simmonds and Whaikaha.

“We’ve also directed, as a Cabinet, that any further decisions that the ministry makes about changing its criteria, its funding, needs to be properly consulted, properly sequences. It needs to go to Cabinet before it’s enacted,” Willis said."

"No matter how temporary these changes turn out to be, they threaten to undermine a trust between government and disabled people slowly built over decades. Built on the fragile hope that after all this time we might be trusted to run our own lives."

Why we cannot let the disability support changes happen

Opinion - I was hopeful about the future. This is not what that future looks like. This is a massive step backwards into the past, Henrietta Bollinger writes.
