Challenges for Discipleship in the Context of the War of Attrition: The Ukrainian Case
<p xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance" dir="auto" id="d3988986e65">This article highlights the challenges faced by evangelicals in Ukraine who have set
out to be faithful disciples of Christ in the face of the country’s current war for
survival. It opens with an analysis of the historical context that shaped Ukrainian
evangelical Protestantism, including the influence of the radical Reformation, dispensationalist
eschatology, the tradition and spirituality of the Orthodox Church, and life in the
atheistic, hostile Soviet society. It discusses distinct features of the traditional
Ukrainian evangelical theology of discipleship and its practice, such as the importance
of conversion and separation from the world, Christianity as a way of life following
Christ, radical pacifism, and the significance of evangelism. Next presented is an
analysis of the existential, theological, ethical and social challenges that Ukrainian
Christians are facing as they seek to incorporate social responsibility into the discipleship
of the Kingdom of God since the Revolution of Dignity and the Russian aggression in
2014, and especially since Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022. Attention is briefly
paid to the responses of Russian evangelicals to the war, before the article concludes
with an overview of the theology of discipleship in a war of attrition: humility,
the solidarity of love, self-denial, prophetic imagination and courage.
</p><p xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance" dir="auto" id="d3988986e70">Cet article met en lumière les défis auxquels sont confrontés les évangéliques d’Ukraine
qui ont entrepris d’être de fidèles disciples du Christ dans le contexte actuel de
guerre pour la survie du pays. Il commence par une analyse du contexte historique
qui a façonné le protestantisme évangélique ukrainien, notamment l’influence de la
Réforme radicale, l’eschatologie dispensationaliste, la tradition et la spiritualité
de l’Église orthodoxe et la vie au sein d’une société soviétique athée et hostile.
Il examine les caractéristiques de la théologie évangélique ukrainienne traditionnelle
du discipulat et de sa pratique, telles que l’importance de la conversion et de la
séparation du monde, le christianisme en tant que mode de vie à la suite du Christ,
le pacifisme radical et l’importance de l’évangélisation. Suit une analyse des défis
existentiels, théologiques, éthiques et sociaux auxquels les chrétiens ukrainiens
sont confrontés lorsqu’ils cherchent à intégrer la responsabilité sociale dans la
vie de disciple du Royaume de Dieu depuis la Révolution de la Dignité et l’agression
russe en 2014, et surtout depuis l’invasion à grande échelle de la Russie en 2022.
Les réponses des évangéliques russes à la guerre font l’objet d’une brève attention,
avant que l’article se termine par un aperçu de la théologie du discipulat dans le
contexte d’une guerre d’usure : humilité, solidarité inspirée par l’amour, abnégation,
imagination prophétique et courage.
</p><p xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance" dir="auto" id="d3988986e75">Vorliegender Artikel betont die Herausforderungen evangelikaler Christen in der Ukraine,
die treue Nachfolger Christi sein möchten angesichts des gegenwärtigen Überlebenskriegs
ihrer Heimat. Zunächst untersucht werden die geschichtlichen Faktoren, die die Gestalt
des evangelikalen Protestantismus in der Ukraine geprägt haben: Die radikale Reformation,
eine dispensationalistische Eschatologie, orthodoxe Tradition und Spiritualität sowie
das Leben in der feindseligen atheistischen Sowjetgesellschaft. Zur Sprache kommen
eindeutige Kennzeichen ukrainischer evangelikaler Theologie und Praxis der Jüngerschaft,
zum Beispiel der Stellenwert der Bekehrung, Absonderung von der Welt, Christsein als
Nachfolge Christi, radikaler Pazifismus und die Wichtigkeit der Evangelisation. Folgt
eine Untersuchung existentieller, theologischer, ethischer and sozialer Herausforderungen
für jene Christen in der Ukraine, die gesellschaftliche Verantwortung in ihre Jüngerschaft
im Reich Gottes integrieren möchten seit der Revolution der Würde und der russischen
Aggression 2014, umso mehr seit der vollständigen Invasion 2022. Nach einem Streiflicht
auf Reaktionen russischer Evangelikalen zum Krieg schließt der Artikel mit einem Überblick
über eine Theologie der Jüngerschaft inmitten einer Abnutzungskrieg: Demut, Solidarität
der Liebe, Selbstverleugnung, prophetische Vorstellungskraft und Mut.
