Interesting Find

Found in a local charity shop, mid to late 1950's GB-Bell & Howell Autoload 16mm cine camera.

No clue if it would work but in decent condition and just nice to have, complete with original bag and manual.

Lola and Loki were fascinated by it 😂

I still find it remarkable that these were taken on a camera made in 1954. Entirely mechanical. Entirely manual. More than 70 years old — and still capable of producing images like these.

Phew. Finally finished it. Spent a ton of time tweaking it. The build quality was, to put it mildly, “not great” to begin with. Even though it’s from 1955—it’s not like it’s the ’70s or ’80s yet—it should have been decent...
But everything’s uneven—the pressure plate is warped, the film path is a bit crooked, and the case isn’t perfect either.
I had to bend things endlessly, reassemble it, and check it over and over. It turned into a lot, a lot of hassle.
Was it worth going to all that trouble over the “Zorkiy”? It wasn’t. But I have a personal “flaw”—I can’t leave something unrepaired.
As a result, I settled for a compromise—it’s acceptable, even if not perfect.

By the way, if they were producing cameras like this today—given the current level of Chinese automated manufacturing—they could be made to be practically perfect. The thing is, it’s hardly worth going to all that trouble today with a focal-plane shutter.

Besides, there are excellent high-tech cameras that deliver superb results—whether digital or film. The Nikon F3 and later models, or the budget Canon SLRs from the early 2000s (300v, 7s, etc.). Or even take a Praktica—the results and quality are already quite predictable with those.

But—I went ahead and restored a Zorki-2S just for the fun of it. At the same time, I traced the evolution of design thinking in photography during the 1950s.

Пациент Зоркий-2С, 1955г.
А с этой камерой я порядком замаялся. И до сих пор пока её не настроил.
Вообще, Зоркий-4 и Зоркий-2 очень разные, хоть они и выпускались практически в одно и то же время (Зоркий-4 начали в 1956).
Зоркий-2с гораздо проще по устройству, но и гораздо менее технологичная камера. Её намного сложнее собирать и настраивать. Понятно, почему Зоркий-4 в СССР выпустили в количестве 2.6 миллионов штук - она была технологически очень совершенной, собиралась быстро и точно, регулировалась легко и ремонтируется тоже легко.
Зоркий-2с без специального инструмента даже не разберёшь. Дальномер регулируется трудно. Рабочий отрезок (flange distance) настраивать вообще боль.
Вот с этой настройкой я бьюсь уже два дня - и все ещё мимо. Дело в том, что нижняя правая сторона глубже верхней аж на 0.3мм. Это катастрофично для резкости. Причина - корпус камеры кривой. Прокладками это можно скомпенсировать, но при этом само кольцо, фланец, изгибается и Объектив в него закручивается туго, кольцо резкости перестаёт поворачиваться. При этом корпус у Зоркий-2 уже литой, жёсткий, выгибать его крайне трудно и приходится делать это наугад. Я никогда не знаю, смогу ли скомпенсировать прокладками результат последней рихтовки... Ставить, закручивать, проверять, снова откручивать, снимать, снова ставить - и это уже два дня...

С другой стороны, весь мой опыт с "Зоркими" и "Киевами" негативно характеризует общее качество советских фотокамер. Где-то только процентов 10 камер имеют безукоризненное механическое качество. К моему большому сожалению, потому что мне глубоко симпатичен советский проект и его опыт, его наследие.
