The local mall is remodeling the outdoor dining area. An amazing set of specialized vehicles pump concrete onto the floor, where workers quickly smooth it into place. I joke that the crane is Portugal's national bird. From this vantage point several floors up, I counted 36 cranes along both sides of the #Douro. A new bridge will carry the ruby metro line over to #vilaNovaDeGaia. #portugal #porto #construction #urban

Public clothes wash & drying lines next to the Douro River in an increasingly upscale neighborhood. In #Portugal it is illegal to photograph people without consent so I carefully took shots without disturbing the people scrubbing clothes. Yet even at sunset, the wash area is in use. I hope it does not turn into condos, that old and new can coexist. #vilaNovaDeGaia #lavadouro
Potato update! I had a great experience yesterday. We walked in to the local café with an extra 82 planting potatoes. Between my basic Portuguese & a bit of mime, one of the guys at the bar very happily claimed them. A younger lad, 20s, came up to talk with us in fluent English. He then reached into his pocket and pulled out a baggie. Uh oh, I thought, because in the US nothing good would happen next.
But here? Wheat seeds, from his father sitting at a nearby table. I am out of space for this year anyway so it's just as well that I wasn't offered any, but I have a new ambition for next year. The local wheat variety is short. That's all I know. But I love that the young men at our neighborhood bar walk around with baggies of wheat seeds. Time to become a café regular. #garden #gardening #porto #vilanovadegaia

Fruit tree wall! Crossing the Douro River on the downtown #Porto side across from #VilaNovaDeGaia, there is a beautiful section of the old Roman city wall. And in front, there is a small grove of orange trees. Stone walls have great thermal mass, so they improve the microclimate for citrus, plus provide shelter from strong winds. This is the sort of thing I read about in books. Seeing it implemented in practice is delightful. I have no idea but I like to imagine there have been fruit trees there for centuries, for as long as the wall has been there. And then the river view is always spectacular. Church bells rang in the distance to call out 6 pm as the sun set over the ocean. It's a magical city. #gardening #organic #history #citrus #douro
Carnaval in #porto means children with streamers! It was also the first day that felt like Spring, and some flowering bushes contributed too. #vilanovadegaia #bloomscrolling
