Mr. Carlson acquired an instrument tuner. It doesn't just use vacuum tubes, it uses vacuum tubes, a custom pulsing neon tube, _multiple_ very custom transformers, a giant hidden reference tuning fork, a motor, and a 12-speed transmission gearbox, and it came to him fully working and _recently in service_.

Basically if you're into holy shit old electrics, you will probably enjoy this:

(for reference, you can get phone apps for this, or you can buy little dedicated standalone devices the size of... idk, a thick credit card, or also the kind that's smaller and has a clip pickup that attaches to your instrument head. BUT NOT IN 1930)

Taking A Look At Variable Vacuum Capacitors

Variable capacitors may be useful, but the air gap that provides their capacitance is their greatest weakness. Rather than deal with the poor dielectric properties of air, some high-end variable ca…

The TYPE 281 by Crown Radio Tubes is another make of the „type 81“ half wave rectifier. The blackened mesh wire anode was made to cope the problem of heat spots in solid plates. Of course this expense was not viable for a long time. In operation the dull orange glowing filament is visible through the plate assembly.

The Arcturus 181 is a early single diode half-wave rectifier of the „type 81“ family of tubes. It was made in it’s own variant by many manufacturers including european copies and parallel variants. The cobalt blue glass was discontinued by Arcturus in 1928 due to another crisis, but the boxes and logo carried on the blue color scheme.

Vacuum tube radio progress: got decent reception of several medium wave AM stations: BBC radio 5, Radio Caroline and a Dutch one. I learned to stay away from switching power supplies, all I tried were so noisy I couldn't hear anything else. With a linear supply the sound is pleasant, but could still be a bit louder. #radio #diyelectronics #vacuumtube

One of the very early electric clocks from 1926. The General Radio Co. Type 411 synchronous motor primary frequency standard. Used to calibrate the (then) new quartz crystal oscillators. Taking into account inflation, it cost $2,400 in today's dollars.. #horology #metrology #timekeeping #vacuumtube

How did all these get in here? what sorcery materials are these? 😱
