To mark the beginning of autumn, it’s a tradition for Telugu Hindu women to celebrate with a flower festival called Bathukamma. This year I was privileged to join Kulwant Singh, the Indian consul for Southern California, for the celebration at TOHS. Thanks to teacher Sandra Martinez, the AAUW Thousand Oaks chapter, and the TOHS Latino Youth Leadership Group for inviting councilmember Gutierrez and me to attend today’s session on city government and youth involvement.

Students asked really good questions about representation, mass transit, and the role of local government. Councilmember Gutierrez and I encouraged them (and everyone, really) to become more engaged in civic life.
