37 years ago today Tank Man stopped a column of 18 tanks as they approached Tienanmen Square in Beijing. Four tanks were seen in the iconic photo, but there were another 14 behind them. I hope to one day be half as brave. #China #TiananmenSquare #64余孽还是太多

#TiananmenSquare had been cleared but defiance remained. On #ThisDayInHistory in 1989, the #TankMan photo was taken. As a column of tanks went to move around him, he moved, then later climbed onto it and spoke with the crew, then blocked them again until a group pulled him aside.

EU報道官は4日、#天安門事件 から37年が経過した今も、#EU は犠牲者を追悼し続け、人権と基本的自由を平和裏に擁護する全ての人々と連帯していく、と述べた。

This design was my entry in Spoonflower's ‘Retro Postcards’ Design Challenge in 2019. Hand-painted, 'boneless' wash (after Ren Yi) & line art. © Su Schaefer 2019

The Contest Brief talked of "vacation memories with a vintage flair... experiment... or celebrate your most exciting travels by boat, train, airplane or even car..." & could have added, “or tank”. So, I chose to commemorate Tiananmen Square on the 4th of June 1989, using Ren Yi's “boneless wash” (& Ren Xiong's 'Myriad'), for Tiananmen Man.
First the tanks came for him and then he went to the tanks, side stepping to stay in front when they tried to go around, and climbing on to remonstrate with the soldiers. Exciting times! We know where he'd been (shopping - the poignancy of those shopping bags!) but where did he go? Never seen again!
Bob Hawke, Australian Prime Minster in 1989, made a unilateral decision to give the 27,000 Chinese students then in Australia residency rights, & around 42,000 permanent visas for Chinese students were later granted.

@Em0nM4stodon @benroyce I remember #TiananmenSquare vividly, especially the man who stood in front of the tanks. He was carrying what looked like two shopping bags. Very casual, but indefatigable. When the tanks tried to go around him, he moved directly in front of them again. He inspired me with his bravery and selflessness, and the tank drivers inspired me by their unwillingness to simply run him over. They gave me hope. The protest ended very badly, but I think the man and tanks will keep the memory alive and lead to a better day.

Today, 37 years ago, was the Tiananmen Square massacre in Beijing.

Remember these events.
Remember these people who fought for freedom and democracy.
This is important 💛☂️

"On the 30th anniversary of the protests in 2019, the well-known Chinese artist Ai Weiwei wrote that 'autocratic and totalitarian regimes fear facts because they have built their power on unjust foundations' and he also wrote that memory is important: 'without it there is no such thing as a civilised society or nation' because 'our past is all we have.'"
