Thomas Morgan – Around You Is A Forest | Eigentijds | Written in Music

Ended Thursday and welcomed Friday after a morning walk with Trios: Chapel by Charles Lloyd from 2022

“Our first performance has always had a magical place in my memory bank.”

And magical it was. Opening with Billy Strayhorn’s “Blood Count,” originally a feature for the late Johnny Hodges with the Duke Ellington Orchestra, it is a performance that can only be described as heartfelt. Lloyd’s mother ran a rooming house in Memphis, and Lloyd’s childhood memories are filled with impressions of musicians from the touring big bands who stayed there — the Jimmie Lunceford Orchestra, and Duke Ellington’s Famous Orchestra especially. His memories of meeting Johnny Hodges as a youngster are particularly vivid. While the present thinks it knows it all, the past — here in terms of memories, dreams, and reflections — had a casting vote in shaping the destiny of this performance.

New #review today: "These two recordings see drummer #DanWeiss in trio configurations: first we have Dedication, which is credited to the Dan Weiss Trio and features #ThomasMorgan (bass) and #JacobSacks (piano); the second is Even Odds, with #MiguelZenón (alto sax) and #MattMitchell (piano). In both cases, Weiss is the composer." #ExposeOnline #jazz http://expose.org/index.php/articles/display/dan-weiss-dedication-even-odds-2.html

Jakob Bro - Taking Turns

Bro (guitar) is joined again by Bill Frisell (guitar), Lee Konitz (sax, in one of his last recorded appearances), Jason Moran (piano), Thomas Morgan (bass), and Andrew Cyrille (drums).

These tuns were composed by Bro and range from free-floating back and forth to more driving songs. There are lots of melodic lines being passed around, and the title is quite appropriate.

Jakob Bro - Gefion

This is Bro's ECM debut (although I also have three of his Loveland LPs, which I'm sure I'll feature soon).

Bro's reverberant restraint fits in well with the classic ECM production/house sound. He's joined by Thomas Morgan on bass, and they swap melodic lines back and forth while Jon Christensen's cymbal work (with the occasional drum) chimes behind.

Good stuff.

Tonight: first:: Seen Thomas Morgan many times, but always backing someone (oftentimes Bill Frisell). Think this is the first time he's leading things, all week at the Stone. Tonight in a cool duo with drummer-of-the-moment Johnathan Blake. This is some hep shit.
