Il ministro degli Esteri di Israele Gideon Sàar aveva promesso provvedimenti: sono presto arrivati. Il soldato dell’Idf che ha distrutto una statua di Gesù nel sud del Libano è stato condannato a 30 giorni di carcere ed è stato rimosso dal servizio di combattimento. Stessa sorte per il suo commilitone che lo filmava mentre con un martello colpiva l’icona.
L’indagine interna si è conclusa lunedì sera rivelando che il fatto è stato compiuto nell’ambito di un’operazione nel villaggio cristiano di Debel, nel Libano meridionale. Mentre il soldato colpiva la statua di Gesù crocifisso erano presenti altri sei militari israeliani che non sono intervenuti per fermarlo. Tutti e sei sono stati convocati per un colloquio conoscitivo che deve però ancora svolgersi. Solo dopo le delegazioni di comando decideranno se e quali provvedimenti adottare nei loro confronti.
L’ufficio del portavoce dell’esercito ha dichiarato che l’Idf esprime profondo rammarico per l’accaduto e sottolinea che l’attività in Libano è diretta contro Hezbollah e altri elementi terroristici, non contro i cittadini libanesi. Il Comando Nord si sta per questo adoperando per aiutare la comunità del villaggio a sostituire la statua. Anche il Capo di Stato Maggiore, Eyal Zamir, ha condannato l’incidente, affermando che si è trattato di un comportamento inappropriato e di una violazione dei valori dell’Idf.

Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar had promised action: it has now arrived. The IDF soldier who destroyed a statue of Jesus in southern Lebanon has been sentenced to 30 days in prison and removed from combat duty. The same fate befell his comrade who filmed him smashing the icon with a hammer.

The internal investigation concluded Monday evening revealing that the incident occurred as part of an operation in the Christian village of Debel, in southern Lebanon. While the soldier struck the statue of the crucified Jesus, six other Israeli soldiers were present who did not intervene to stop him. All six have been summoned for an introductory interview that has yet to take place. Only after the command delegations will decide whether and what measures to take against them.

The army spokesman’s office stated that the IDF deeply regrets the incident and emphasizes that activity in Lebanon is directed against Hezbollah and other terrorist elements, not against Lebanese citizens. The Northern Command is therefore working to help the village community replace the statue.
