DroppieHave revered #EMForster 's #TheMachineStops ever since discovering it 1000 years ago. Decided i prolly should read more of him, so atm am ~2/3 thru #WhereAngelsFearToTread . Oh damn, is this a case of never meet your heroes? Ugh, the #empirism, #imperialism, #sexism, but most overtly of all, the #racism. Ugh. Is he simply of his time, or is he even worse? 🤔🤷
Given that for many years now all my leisure #eBook reading is #GutenbergProject #ePubs on my tablet, by definition most if not all of this is old to extremely old works, ergo, i am consuming a nearly unbroken diet this way of obsolete appalling societal attitudes. I wonder if my decision years ago therefore to construct my eBook #library this way in order to digest, learn, & enjoy lots of classic English, French, Russian et al #literature, is actually helping or harming me [given my natal intense #misanthropy & #depression hardly need much encouragement]. 🤯

Dieser ironisch zu verstehende Aufruf derjenigen, die sich vollständig von filternden und verfälschenden Medien abhängig gemacht haben, macht deutlich, wie absurd es ist, wenn wir uns immer mehr von der unmittelbaren Realitätserfahrung entfernen und unsere Menschwerdung aus den Medien erschaffen.
Die Message von #EMForster aus dem Jahr 1909 ist ganz klar:
Geht raus!
Macht euch euer eigenes Bild von der Welt!
Lebt!

Je mehr man sich von den Fakten und der unmittelbaren Naturerfahrung entfernt, umso mehr werden wir geprägt durch den Filter der Medien.
Es besteht dadurch die Gefahr, dass eine parallele Erzählung von der Natur den Platz der Realität einnimmt und allmählich der Konsens entsteht, die Realität sei die Erzählung.
Auch diese uns gegenwärtig beschäftigende Realitätsverfremdung spielte #EMForster bereits 1909 in #DieMaschineStehtStill durch.

E. M. Forster wusste schon 1909 die heimliche Macht des Flugzeugmodus einzuschätzen. Er nannte ihn dereinst allerdings "isolation knob".
„Sie betätigte den Isolationsknopf, sodass sie niemand mehr erreichen konnte, tippte mit dem Finger an den Lichtapparat, und das kleine Zimmer versank in Dunkelheit.“ (S. 6)
