The Invasion (2007)
The Invasion is a befuddled example of the Pax Martiana-at-the-expense-of-Human Free Will genre. I’m not going to discuss the evils of free will (or lack thereof); I’m more interested in the movie’s internal logic (or lack thereof).
What we have here is a very aggressive alien life form that conducts a hostile takeover of planet Earth only to declare world peace and pass universal healthcare, among several other altruistic measures. At the same time, in an unintentionally ironic twist, this alien intelligence or whatever it is turns out to be xenophobic, as well as homicidal and decidedly not pet-friendly. On the one hand, they all seem to agree that War is Hell, and on the other, that Hell is for Children.
So which is it? Peace-loving freaks, or intolerant, totalitarian fascists? Because you can’t have it both ways — or, rather, you could, if the aliens, or rather the pseudo-Pod People that result from this so-called Invasion, were themselves divided into two different camps: the Kill All Humans and Save All Humans schools of thought. As it is, though, they all come across as schizophrenic just for the sake of it; or, to be more specific, for the sake of the script.
As part of their conquest plan, one Pod Person who is also a CDC official «disguis[es] the spores as flu vaccine» shots (Wikipedia). This is uncalled for on at least two different levels. It would be unnecessary in-universe were it not that the filmmakers apparently haven’t heard about airborne transmission (nor do they know what exactly it is that a vaccine does, nor are they aware of the difference between a virus and a bacterium), and it’s unnecessary as a fictional conceit because do we really need movies to give crackpots more ideas?
Now, this is a fantasy film, and the presence of extraterrestrial beings should tip us off that we shouldn’t take it too seriously; on the other hand, the people who think there is something fishy about vaccines also believe ufology is a legit science — to them, The Invasion is a documentary.
And speaking of vaccines, the heroes eventually come up with a Magic Antidote that not only immunizes but also cures, and within a year the alien virus (or bacterium; I guess we’ll never know for sure) is eradicated. «Why was it so easy to cure?» Because it «has no real defense system.»
This movie has such a short attention span that in less than 100 minutes it has already forgotten that one of the first things it told us was that «This is a highly resilient organism, able to survive the bitter cold of space and the searing heat of reentry.» So much for «no real defense system.»
