Nearby Tenryū-ji (天龍寺 'Temple of the Heavenly Dragon') was completed in 1345 for the 7th anniversary of Emperor Go-Daigo's death. Ashikaga Takauji (足利尊氏 1305-1358) settled on the name after hearing of his brother's dream.

At the plaza's heart is a small fountain and dragon sculpture, inspired by the golden creature Ashikaga Tadayoshi (足利直義 1306-1352) saw emerging from the Ōi River (大堰川) in a dream.
