From the very beginning Jōjakkō-ji melted into the forested slopes of Mt. Ogura, the place where Fujiwara-no-Teika (藤原定家 1162-1241) had compiled the Hyakunin Isshu (百人一首) at his villa.
Nisshin wanted his temple to be part of nature and so no large precincts were created.
