Finished #TashaSuri's The Oleander Sword. Loved it! Really looking forward to wrap up the Burning Kingdoms trilogy with The Lotus Empire very soon!

Tasha Suri's 'The Lotus Empire' book 3 of her 'Burning Kingdoms' trilogy, was less involving than the earlier books for me, but it's still some of the best-written, most vivid contemporary epic fantasy I've read.

I have finished reading the Burning Kingdoms trilogy by Tasha Suri. The last book, The Lotus Empire was released in November 2024. This is one of my favourite book series. I’ve loved how relationships have been developed, shaping the story and the world. It’s a great story about faith and sacrifice, and love. I’ve enjoyed discovering this south asian setting. Another point to note is the importance of the flora. Overall, it’s a story full of feelings : hope, joy, but also grief and the bittersweetness of entwined hate and love.

So after a day-long break, I have plunged once again in the Burning Kingdom trilogy. The first two I had read before, but this one is brand new. It starts off where #TashaSuri last left us, with broken people and so little hope. And then, it makes it clear the rift between Priya and Malini, Ahiranya and Parijatdvipa, is absolute. The two sides are waves crashing against each other, and it does feel like their only path forward is death.

That being said, as bleak as it is, I still hold some hope. Maybe, if none of the two can stop their movement, then a third party could bring a solution ? And clearly, Bhumika may. In a more "meta" way, while it’s clear that Priya and Malini are the main characters, Bhumika is a close third. And she has the knowledge of how to defeat the yaksas, preferably without burning everything down. So far, she hasn’t been much present, traveling to Alor and the priests of the nameless. But maybe she’ll arrive on time to save everyone. Rao and Sima are two other aces, and perhaps Lata could be as well. Rao is clearly unwell though, and may have lost his faith. Sima, as a prisoner, doesn’t have much agency. Also, it’s said that the yaksa’s victory is still not assured, despite the rot having taken root in many part of the Empire. It may be that they’re afraid of the true mother’s flame. It may be something else entirely.

I’m eager to see what tomorrow’s reading sessions will bring !

After a first book where the protagonist work to get what they want, they finally manage to achieve it there. Only to get it all cruelly taken away. I’m eager to read the last volume of the trilogy. The fate of the characters feel already set, and hope is rare. I’m not sure what will happen, but it’s likely to make me cry. But whether it is of joy of sadness I don’t know.

I found Tasha Suri's 'The Oleander Sword' a very compelling and atmospheric book, with plausible worldbuilding, and a very weighty and consequential approach to magic. Very striking prose too, which I've rarely found in my efforts to get up to speed with contemporary fantasy. Highly recommended.

The latest read in my campaign to catch up with some of the last decade’s best-regarded fantasy was Tasha Suri’s ‘The Jasmine Throne’. I found it highly entertaining and profoundly thoughtful, with colourful, immersive worldbuilding.

Oliver Arditi's review of The Jasmine Throne (The Burning Kingdoms, #1)

4/5: Although I can't comment on its authenticity, Tasha Suri's The Jasmine throne gives the impression that its worldbuilding is built on a solid historical basis. It's set in an invented world built from South Asian cultural materials, with characters largely bearing Hindi names (as far as I can tell, from a position of profound ignorance!) I have noticed that fantasy fiction set in either a modified historical milieu, or in ones derived from real-world cultures other than the genre baseline of medieval Europe, tend to be a lot more convincing. I like to feel that the characters are formed and...

Half way through the second book in the trilogy and it's even better than the first. Just great fantasy in a unique setting. Recommended.
