I’ve organized and begun spinning on my Bacon Burner batt. I’m using my spindles from Woodland Handcrafts which is my first time really doing a project on them. Currently using the little owl which is so cute and of course also spins well. This project will take a while but it’s only 2 oz of fiber so maybe won’t take as long as I fear. #HandSpinning #fiber #FiberArts #spinning #supportedspindle
I stopped by the Woodland Handcrafts site just out of curiousity. I’ve only placed preorders and never successfully ordered something from stock but I hit the jackpot and soon will be the owner of this gorgeous morel mushroom support spindle. OMG. #handspinning #supportedspindle
Random musings: taking up spinning with a supported spindle has opened up a whole new category of shopping/browsing - “oh hey this is a cute little bowl that seems like it would work well for spinning” #handSpinning #handSpinning #supportedSpindle
#supportedSpindle #spinning Day 12: my yarn is done drying, skeined up, and wound into a ball, and I have made my first hexiflat out of handspun for my beekeeper’s quilt. Took about 3 gms of yarn. This is really more a sport weight yarn and the other Hexiflats are fingering so it’s a little puffier and bigger than the rest but by the time I have enough of these to make a quilt I’m sure I’ll have lots of variation TBH. #Handspinning #FiberArts
My first true skein of yarn from my supported spindles is done! It does seem fluffier and airier than yarn I’ve made previously. And concerns about unevenness and slubs seem to have been mostly addressed by the plying and setting. Plan is to cake it and make a hexiflat and then keep the rest as a sample. In the meantime, I have more rolags I can start spinning on the supported spindles plus I need to get back to the WIP on my wheel. #supportedSpindle #spinning #HandSpinning #Fiberarts
#supportedSpindle #spinning day 11 cont’d: plying bracelet was successful! I was able to get the singles off of the spindle onto my hand and to add these singles to my plied yarn! I then wound it on my niddy noddy, tied it in key spots, and weighed it. Looks to be approximately 54 yds and 14g before setting it. I soaked it and snapped it and now it is hanging out drying. #handspinning #FiberArts
#supportedSpindle #spinning day 11 cont’d: here is my makeshift spindle Lazy Kate and the beginnings of my plied yarn on Lizzie, my EEW 6.1. The yarn can be charitably said to be quite… rustic. That said, it has definitely evened out significantly. I thought I had done one rolag onto each spindle but clearly I did not so I have a bit left on the first spindle that I will probably try to ply using a plying bracelet when I have more time. #handspinning #FiberArts
#supportedSpindle #spinning Day 11: my spinning of the two rolags is completed. Next up is plying which I’m probably going to do either in my EEW 6.1 or my Ladybug wheel. Excited to see how these are going to ply up. This is just a tiny bit of fiber I got for free so not sure it will be enough to make anything out of it but maybe a hexiflat for my quilt? #Handspinning #FiberArts
I have a strong inkling that if woodturning were one of my skill sets I would now be trying to figure out how to become a maker of support spindles. Because they are beautiful and functional and lovely. But the last time I did any woodworking I was in 7th/8th grade (I grew up in a place where it was mandatory in public school curriculum). Instead of learning to make my own I will just get better at using them, and then make more and more yarn. #fiberArts #spinning #HandSpinning #supportedSpindle
#supportedSpindle #spinning Day 10: my singles are still much less consistent in thickness and containing more slubs than i would be happy with on my wheel. But I am giving myself grace in the “I’m still learning” stage. And once in a while I get a stretch where the long draw actually works and I can see how it’s supposed to work and I think… ahhhhh!” About halfway through the second rolag on my second spindle. Looking forward to plying to see how it evens out. #Handspinning #FiberArts
