According to the Wall Street Journal, Israel secretly built a military base in the Iraqi desert in February to support its air campaign against Iran, shortly before the US-Israeli strikes began on 28 February.
The base reportedly served as a logistics hub for the Israeli Air Force and housed special forces, as well as search-and-rescue teams prepared to act if Israeli pilots were downed.
The base was almost discovered in early March after Iraqi state media said a local shepherd reported unusual military activity, including helicopter movements in the area. Iraqi troops were dispatched to investigate, but Israeli forces launched airstrikes to keep them at a distance and prevent the site from being discovered, the WSJ reported, citing a source. The strikes killed one Iraqi soldier, and Baghdad initially blamed the US, saying at the time: “This reckless operation was carried out without coordination or approval.”
The reported base was located in Iraq’s western desert, with OSINT analysts later identifying what appeared to be a makeshift airstrip in a dry lakebed about 180 kilometers southwest of Karbala. The report also cited then-Israeli Air Force chief Maj. Gen. Tomer Bar, who said in March that special forces were carrying out “extraordinary missions” during the war on Iran.
