My wife and I bought a used 2011 Ford Ranger XLT last night and I had to drive it home since my wife was too skittish with the transmission. It was a "trial by fire" for me since I'd never driven stick before, but we got home without any incidents aside from a small number of stalls.
It's kind of wild that even a "normal" car with stick feels better to drive than an automatic one. You don't need a sports car! Compared to automatic, the throttle feels much more "connected" to the wheels. The salesperson (who mainly drives stick) said it was the lack of the "torque converter bounce".
Just like when I learned to ride a motorcycle, there was a learning curve, but the rewards are so gratifying! :D Honestly, after getting the muscle memory from driving home, the only thing that really jumps out to me as being different is the behavior of the synchronizers.
For those who don't know, motorcycles most often use a sequential non-synchronous transmission, but some companies have automatic offerings now. Oh, and the vast majority of motorscooters use a CVT.

The couple trying to escape the zombies found a car with keys and gas. Suddenly the guy in the driver seat realized the car was a stick with a clutch. He and his girlfriend had to do this complicated maneuver where they traded places. I’ve tried telling my partner, numerous times, that he needs to learn how to drive my 2004 BMW 330Ci for exactly that reason. What if a) I’m dead or already a zombie, b) the only car that runs and has gas on the 405 is a 1947 Plymouth, and c) you still don’t know how to work a clutch? Learn how to drive a car with a clutch, please. It could save your life. I don’t care how antiquated you think it is.
The MES Timesa study commissioned by Cadillac revealed that 66% of American adults knew how to drive a manual transmission. This finding came ahead of the launch of the 2022 Cadillac CT4-V Blackwing and CT5-V Blackwing sport sedans, which featured a six-speed manual as standard. Interestingly, the study also showed that 55% of respondents had owned or leased a manual transmission car at least once, and 40% of those who couldn't drive stick expressed interest in learning.
