Stellar’s Breakfast

I came upon this Stellar’s Jay and its mate early in the morning, digging a hole in the ground with their beaks. After a few minutes, one of them came up with a buried nut and hopped up onto a snag with a triumphant rattling call. I’d never never seen a Stellar’s Jay retrieve cached food before.

Someday I’ll make an artistic composition with a Stellar’s Jay, but for now I’ll keep contenting myself with decent shots of one out in the open.

The new bird friend that visited yesterday, and the resident Stellar's Jay.

From my research last night I feel very confident in saying this is a male red-shafted Northern Flicker.
