Chicago Sun-Times - All | Drones are everywhere, but rules governing them remain invisible by Louis Martinez

AI generated summary, Read the full article for complete information.

Louis Martinez’s commentary warns that while delivery, police and recreational drones are rapidly filling Chicago’s skies, most users remain unaware of the FAA’s licensing and safety rules that govern them. He recounts a near‑disaster during a test flight of a $25,000 Skydio X10, where a slight thumb slip caused the drone to descend toward a lake, illustrating how even trained operators can make critical errors. The article notes the surge of commercial drone services from Amazon, Walmart/Wing, and expanding police programs, juxtaposed with a public education gap: manufacturers and retailers are not required to provide clear licensing information, and many operators lack basic knowledge of airspace restrictions, privacy concerns, and remote‑ID requirements. Martinez urges Illinois lawmakers to mandate plain‑language disclosures at the point of sale and for local governments to fund public outreach on drone regulations, arguing that safety and trust depend on making these invisible rules visible before anyone takes off.

Drones are everywhere, but rules governing them remain invisible

Today, the barrier to owning a drone is a credit card. Manufacturers and retailers have no obligation to clearly explain licensing requirements.

Watch the robotic arm catch Skydio’s F10 drone mid-flight. The arm extends, matches the drone’s path, and locks onto its docking interface for a clean recovery. No pilot input needed for either phase, opening up rapid deployment from moving bases.

Business | California drone maker to spend billions of dollars as it expands manufacturing in the state by Itzel Luna

AI generated summary, Read the full article for complete information.

San Mateo‑based drone maker Skydio announced a $3.5 billion investment to expand U.S. domestic drone manufacturing over the next five years, creating more than 2,000 new jobs—most in California—and supporting thousands of additional positions across its supply chain. The plan follows Beijing’s October blacklist that cut off Skydio’s Chinese battery supply, highlighting U.S. reliance on foreign components for defense tech. By building a new manufacturing facility five times larger than its current Bay Area space and boosting production of critical parts, Skydio aims to break Chinese supply‑chain dependence, strengthen America’s autonomous‑drone market, and cement California’s growing role in aerospace, defense and AI.

Comme souvent, Gaza sert de terrain d’expérimentation pour les fabricants d’armes et les technologies de surveillance — ce que révélait déjà The Lab (édition Mutins de Pangée, disponible dans l’abonnement CinéMutins).

"AI-powered quadcopter drones used by the IDF to commit genocide in Gaza are flying over American cities, surveilling protestors and automatically uploading millions of images to an evidence database.

The drones are made by a company called Skydio which in the last few years has gone from relative obscurity to quietly become a multi-billion dollar company and the largest drone manufacturer in the US.

The extent of Skydio drone usage across the US, and the extent to which their usage has grown in just a few years, is extraordinary. The company has contracts with more than 800 law enforcement and security agencies across the country, up from 320 in March last year, and their drones are being launched hundreds of times a day to monitor people in towns and cities across the country.

Skydio has extensive links with Israel. In the first weeks of the genocide the California-based company sent more than one hundred drones to the IDF with promises of more to come. How many more were delivered since that admission is unknown. Skydio has an office in Israel and partners with DefenceSync, a local military drone contractor operating as the middle man between drone manufacturers and the IDF. "
