The events of the war in Iran show shocking incompetence. I get that the generals warned Trump that starting a war with Iran was a dumb idea, but either they or Trump dropped the ball in other, much more profound ways long before Trump got the idea to obey Netanyahu and start a war with Iran.

History is littered with formerly great militaries that were crushed because their generals were fighting the previous war instead of the next one.

Republicans love to mock the French by calling them “surrender monkeys,” but the reason the French surrendered so quickly in WW2 is exactly what I spelled out in the previous paragraph, which is exactly what our Republican-run military is fucking up in Iran right now.

The US military is the way it is because of decades of work and trillions of dollars spent preparing to fight the numerically superior USSR in a global armed conflict. The military we have would have been very good at fighting that war, but the instant the USSR collapsed, the entire structure of our military became obsolete.

I think the momentum came from the fact that many politically connected military contractors were making a lot of money, and did not want to risk ending the gravy train with massive changes to the military. This is pure speculation on my part, however.

The US military watched the very nature of war change in profound ways in Ukraine.

We should have sent people into Ukraine to work closely with the Ukrainians and learn everything we could about what they were doing, then made massive, drastic changes to the US military in response. Remember: at this point, the US military was built around assumptions that were already decades out of date. The need to change should have been far more urgent than it apparently was.

Unfortunately, Trump spent the entire time figuring out how to stab Ukraine in the back instead of learning from them.

And I do not get the impression that the generals themselves were in any hurry to learn from Ukraine and make changes to the US military, because nothing happened under Biden. We just continued with our Cold War-designed military and did nothing to learn from Ukraine, even under Biden. That tells me the Pentagon generals themselves did not understand that their military was obsolete and in need of an overhaul.

What is happening in Iran right now is the inevitable result of not only Trump's incompetence but also the incompetence of those Pentagon generals who apparently forgot the most important lessons from military history.

I suppose I shouldn't be surprised that the new rule at the #Pentagon is "anything's cool as long as it's in support of the #DearLeader or his hangers-on"... but the depths that these digits have dragged the #USMilitary down to, so quickly, is frankly breathtaking.

Even more remarkable are the ex-military folk who think this horrid breach of discipline is perfectly acceptable.
