Sisters of Rail, 8: Food - Heat of a Dozen Mirrors

A very first-person narrative of seemingly random events, devoid of the usual lubricated chatter among the familiar family members. It puts the protagonist, Charity, in unusual territory, navigating the social codes of acquaintances of different lifestyles and expectations, even entitlements, to her own.

Sisters of Rail: Chapter Eight: Food - Heat of a Dozen Mirrors I picked my way through the crowd so I would not need to shout.  As I drew near to Kim I could see that her black dress was decorated with some kind of rainbow parrots.  The design was woven, not dyed, which meant it was probably worth more than all my clothes together.  That was without taking the buttons into account.  Each one was a unique piece of the finest glasswork, such as the highest value coins were made of.  Such were the benefits of being married to a cleric.

Sisters of Rail, 7: Morn--Dusting the Ceiling Fans.

Another day in the life of the buttery-smooth home garden family of blossoming children living at the edge of an idyllic hamlet dominated by its railway line, apprehensively waiting for the time a daughter gets an injured hand mended by some magician.

Sisters of Rail: Chapter Seven: Morn - Dusting the Ceiling Fans I rose with the sun.  The light of a new day always brought relief, but today my feelings were more complex.  Thanks to my hand, I had slept fitfully.  Though the pain was centred on my injury, discomfort and wrongness suffused my body.  My head felt both too big and too small, and my thoughts kept getting crowded together and lost in a void.  The confusion of half-remembered dreams did not help.  Or were they half-dreamed memories?

Sisters of Rail, Chapter 6: Boon — Insolently Casual Gait.

Chapter six directly continues its predecessor with intensely clever writing: a discourse so constructed as to build tension and drip-feed the secrets connivingly hidden underneath the previous two installments. A change of pace (again), and a change in the characterizations as the protagonists wise up to the reality of the new normal.

Sisters of Rail: Chapter Six: Boon - Insolently Casual Gait I was not surprised to hear that Lu Shenks had 'freaked out' at the situation.  It was paradoxically easy to picture the unthinkable scene.  A wagon lying dismembered, just short of a critical bridge support.  A valuable cargo of logs strewn about, delaying a critical delivery.  And worst of all, the steel rails bent all out of skew on their timbers.  A vital connection of civilisation, severed. Our town's reputation, ruined.

I've decided that the accumulation of reviews of on-line serializations I've done for Mastodon now constitutes a sufficient body of work that it deserves its own web site. Also, posterity, just in case....

Serialization Reviews

Sisters of Rail, Chapter 5 picks up where the interlude left off and transforms it into a critical juncture with some second-hand recounting of the succeeding events. It is an interesting way to break the structure of the work, and allows for opposing personalities to be juxtaposed and examined in a tight space, which turns out to be very funny in places.

I love this work!

Sisters of Rail: Chapter Five: Yard - Unintended Signal Flag I hardly tasted my remaining food as Father told the tale of the evening's patrol.  It was not a particularly riveting tale, as it hardly differed from any other patrol I had heard him describe, and his descriptions were dry and unexciting.  Nonetheless, I had no room in my thoughts for food.  Only two facts mattered: my life was saved, and something dreadful had occurred involving the railway.

@daisy Sisters of Rail, Chapter 4. In a break away from the homestead, we get to spend an evening out with the family head and find out what his occupational patrols are about. So this chapter introduces two more (presumably) main characters into the plot, and we have a quarrelsome threesome wont to taste adventure in life, but finding only moments of mild slapstick and faux authoritarianism.

@daisy @daisy Sisters of Rail, Chapter 3. Gentle, creamy-smooth description of an evening in the household of the large young family of a poor farmer with high morals and sweet-sour sibling banter.

Sisters of Rail: Chapter Three: Cook - Appreciate the Char "About time," Chynella said, as I deposited the basket of freshly cut parsley on the kitchen bench. "I am sorry that took a little long.  I dropped the scissors."  Both those statements were completely true.  I was no liar. However, that did not mean I was exceedingly generous with the truth.  I did not have anything to hide, but I preferred not to be made to justify every little thing I did, said, or thought.  That was tiresome and unnecessary.

@daisy @daisy I just started reading Sisters of Rail at https://crashsnowdon.com/fiction/sisters-of-rail/. Love how open and expansive the writing is, painting a vivid picture of a strange family living strange lives and yet leaving so much to the imagination of the reader.

All told by the main protagonist, I can't wait to find out what the implied misdemeanours are that she gets up to.

I'm going to pace myself at a chapter per month, and so looking forward to Chapter 2!
