Letter to Nature, 1921. If only it were so easy these days. Do you think the offer of sinistral snails is still open? #snails #sinistral #nature https://www.nature.com/articles/108403e0
Sinistral Limnaea peregra - Nature

LAST year I started a breeding experiment with two pairs of sinistral Limnaea peregra given me by Mr. J. W. Taylor, of Leeds. The first two generations have not come out on any plain plan, and it is necessary to carry them further if the mode of inheritance of this very rare form of one of our commonest freshwater snails is to be worked out. But the young have now quite outgrown the possibilities of my establishment, and if anyone would take over some of them and breed them out (which is quite simple, as they want little attention) they would be doing me a service.

Man, I forgot to post this last week. This was the result of my Southpaw Challenge (left-handed drawings). They came out better than expected, so I'm pleased~

We'll be continuing with more characters from these games this Saturday, so feel free to show up and sabotage me with redeems (suffering = entertainment).

I hope to see you guys there~ Expect a schedule post right after this one.

Speaking of #dextral and #sinistral #snail shells, they often occur via co- #evolution with #predation:

“Asian snail-eating #snakes (Pareas) have more teeth on the right mandible and specialize in predation on the clockwise-coiled majority in shelled snails by soft-body extraction. Snails have countered the snakes’ dextral-predation by recurrent coil reversal, which generates diverse counterclockwise-coiled prey where Pareas snakes live.”

A day spent marking Evolutionary Biology of Animals exam scripts, remotely, rounded off with counting Auricullela shells in the Bishop museum collection. Satisfying to find rare dextrals in an otherwise sinistral species! #chirality #snails #BishopMuseum #sinistral #Evolution
The vast majority of #gastropod species has #dextral (right-handed) shell. #Sinistral individuals are extremely rare in snails. Here is a very nice citizen science project investigating the developmental origin of this #chirality. #science biology #ontogeny #snail #shell #citizenscience
