Governor Signs Washington’s First-in-the-Nation Shared Streets Law » The Urbanist

# Cities in Washington will have the legal authority to create shared streets, which feature much lower speed limits and put pedestrians first, under Senate Bill 5595. Governor Bob Ferguson signed the bill into law Saturday. It will go into effect on July 27.

You don’t have to ban cars everywhere to transform your city centre. But you do have to seriously rethink and redefine the car’s role. There are many ways to do that, from #completestreets to #sharedstreets, pedestrian priority streets & Dutch #woonerfs, that prioritize streets for people, not cars.
Let’s drop the speed limit there to 10 mph and allow pedestrians to legally walk in the street without a “closed” sign. #SharedStreets #SB5595

@Bman At tour of #Broadway #SharedStreets I asked specifically about how businesses got deliveries. The answer: Early dropoff before tables and chairs come out and handtrucks from side streets. Summarizing. NOT A PROBLEM! No change from existing methods though likely easier to park now and certainly more activity.

Why we need more continuous pedestrian crossings!

The Age: Pedestrians were given priority on Melbourne’s ‘Little’ streets. But drivers aren’t sharing

> One exception was Finders Lane at the intersection of the Degraves Street laneway, where the road is raised to footpath level and pedestrians “were observed confidently crossing the street without yielding to cars”.

Motorists and pedestrians don’t understand the new rules, under which the speed limit was lowered to make the laneways more pedestrian-friendly.

Cyclists won an important victory for better bike lanes in Pittsburgh by showing that existing lanes weren't safe. Now they should document how safe bike lanes (and slower streets) improve #neighborhoods and their businesses. https://www.pghcitypaper.com/pittsburgh/advocates-celebrate-city-funding-for-penn-avenue-bike-lane-upgrades/Content?oid=23023598 #cycling #sharedstreets
Advocates celebrate city funding for Penn Avenue bike lane upgrades

Pittsburgh's 2023 capital budget includes $150,000 for shoring up bike lanes along Penn Avenue, which advocates say are viewed by many drivers as parking.

Remember, the idea of “shared streets” doesn’t work if the theory is that everyone’s on an even playing field, because they’re not. Cars need to be prioritized last, usually moving no faster than walkers stroll. The relative size of images on this #Paris street conveys priority. #cityplanning #urbanplanning #streets #streetdesign #urbandesign #walkablecities #cities #sharedstreets
