A bobcat takes a rest after gopher hunting in the Marin Headlands.

I watched this cat hunt for a while in the tall grass and eat three gophers in a row. After that, he needed a rest. Usually they rest in the tall grass as well, making them virtually invisible, but for some reason this one chose an open spot right across from where I was sitting to relax and perhaps keep an eye on me.

A coyote roams a San Francisco hillside, with Downtown SF in the background.
I got this shot by finally forcing myself to avoid the temptation of always shooting with a long telephoto lens. Mounting a mid-range lens made me miss many portrait opportunities and some behavioral shots of the coyote pouncing gophers, but it was worth it when it crossed this ridge exactly where I had hoped it would.

Hunting coyotes do a lot of listening. When they hear the rustling of a gopher near the entrance of its hole, they hang back, look and listen until the gopher peeks out. This is when the coyote pounces.
