Possibly time for the satellites to be doing some sort of flocking work themselves.

But who would trust other satellites?

#NealStephenson the #SciFi writer introduyced a program. #perambulator for that, in this entertaining novel #SevenEves

@Ruth_Mottram
#SciFi #NealStephenson introduced the idea of a program run on many distributed nodes to optimise orbits and the manoeuvres to avoid collisions, called it Perambulator and for plot purposes gave it a very long span of use.
#Seveneves
An entertaining book.

@mastodonmigration

Some work has been done and published on residence time in orbit.
Small fragments low down - even at perigee - fall out quite quickly.

I'm not a mathematician, but it is probably a time between collision problem rather than an amount.

Neal Stephenson's recent #SF novel #SevenEves as well as being well-worth reading does discuss the progression of a slow cascade from a single very large starting point in a larger volume.

Finally got around to reading #SevenEves. It was better than I was expecting. I see the controversy of the third part, but I kinda liked the drastic change.
I am excited by what genetics could do. I greatly enjoyed #Seveneves "a science fiction novel by #NealStephenson published in 2015. The story tells of the desperate efforts to preserve Homo sapiens in the wake of apocalyptic events on Earth" en.mwikipedia.org/wiki/Seveneves

#CREAM would be automated to be #Perambulator perhaps.

It's been done: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seveneves " #Seveneves is a #ScienceFiiction novel by #NealStephenson published in 2015. The story tells of the desperate efforts to preserve Homo sapiens in the wake of apocalyptic events on Earth after the unexplained disintegration of the Moon "

@hollie @SeaFury On a slightly related note, I'm hoping someone will make Neal Stephenson's #Seveneves into a movie... Maybe minus the last part (save that for a sequel everyone will hate).

It could make for a nice claustrophobic survival drama, plus it's got a US president as a villain, so it would be pretty contemporary. 🤷

"Asteroid könnte 2032 statt der Erde auch den Mond treffen"

Für Menschen die #SevenEves (Neal Stephenson) gelesen haben ist das jetzt nicht die größte Beruhigung.

Der kürzlich entdeckte Himmelskörper könnte mit einer Wahrscheinlichkeit von mehr als zwei Prozent die Erde treffen. Auch ein Einschlag auf unserem Trabanten ist möglich
