RoboTaxi's in Austin Update.

Tesla is now indicating they will "tentatively" release RoboTaxi's in Austin on June 22 - a Sunday no less. Wonder if that matters? :-)

What is still an unknown (huge) variable is how "teleoperations" - the remote human based operations and monitoring system, a critical safety feature will work. Tesla has positioned this as operators will be “transported into the device’s world using a state-of-the-art VR rig that allows them to remotely perform complex and intricate tasks.”

Sounds like remote driving to me! No is talking - Tesla, Fed Government, City of Austin are all mum on the subject. Hmmmmm. https://www.wired.com/story/as-robotaxi-rides-begin-we-still-dont-know-the-mystery-of-teslas-human-helpers/ #Tesla #Austin #RoboTaxi #teleoperations #Selfdrivingvehicle #NHTSA #RemoteDriving

Rodney Brooks’ Technology Predictions Scorecard, 2023
http://rodneybrooks.com/predictions-scorecard-2023-january-01/

It blows my mind how much resource (both money and intellect) has been squandered on trying to fully automate the one (essentially failing) mode of transport that dehumanises our towns and cities. Imagine if this effort was applied to something genuinely useful or even essential, like mitigating the affects of the climate crisis…

Predictions Scorecard, 2023 January 01 – Rodney Brooks

Every so often something reminds me that we're living in the future. Today it was a #SelfDrivingVehicle. It even handled a pelaton of cyclists safely. So cool!

Seoul Introduces Self-Driving Taxis

Last year the Seoul city government passed an ordinance enabling the commercial operation of autonomous passenger-carrying vehicles. A six square kilometer region in the Seoul neighborhood of Sangam, near the 2002 World Cup Stadium, was designated as a pilot program test bed. This area encompasses 24 streets totaling 31.3 km. Two companies were selected, and the pilot program launched a few weeks ago. Currently there are three vehicles and passengers can ride for free during this introductory phase. Three more taxis and a bus will be added within this year, with plans for 50 in this region by 2026. For the time being, these cars require a standby driver who takes control in an emergency and in school zones. Check out the short news report (in English) below the break.

There was a smaller autonomous driving test program in the city of Sejong which we wrote about back in January, and [Alfred Jones] gave a keynote presentation at the 2021 Hackaday Remoticon on the challenges of designing self-driving vehicles if you want to learn more on this topic.

Agree 100%. Don't buy new cars but try to maintain and repair the old ones.

It wouldn't surprise us if manufacturers are trying to increase the number of #carAccidents again (from distraction) to exceed the number of accidents from #autonomousVehicles, to increase sales of the autonomous variety.

Apparently #selfDrivingVehicle accidents are already being suppressed, so the net gain for society is likely to be zero, with #plannedObsolesence boosting turnover and waste for good measure.
