Two family members discussing a younger, not very close family member talking about how “well she’s now going to school, but she’s still doodling in her workbooks, so that’s a problem”
And I’m just like. A problem? How are you defining that as a problem? Is she doodling over her own answer so the teacher can’t mark it, for example?
No, apparently the problem is just that you’re not supposed to. And that it’s a rule. And that real life has rules that you must obey, so school must teach conformity. Because even if it is a silly rule, you just have to follow the rules that there are. But it’s not a silly rule. Because your work must be presentable. Because seemingly, there is a single uniform standard across all walks of life, and that is what school must prepare you for.
I don’t even know where to start having a conversation that is neuro-affirming in this context. I highly suspect the young family member in question has ADHD, but even so, neurodiversity isn’t about neurodivergence. Just seems like small fish when they’ve been struggling to even get her to go to school in the first place?
