I'm looking at #GraeberAndWengrowe 's writing about #Schismogenesis in #TheDawnOfEverything:
"questions about values, about what humans really are (and consider themselves to be), and how they should properly relate to one another. (p. 175.)"
&
"ever since Mesolithic times [9000–4300 BCE], the broad tendency has been for human beings to further subdivide, coming up with endless new ways to distinguish themselves from their neighbors (p. 166)"

In 'Seasonality and schismogenesis', social anthropologist #ThomasWidlok draws on longterm fieldwork with Hai//om people of northern Namibia, envisaging an ‘indigenous critique’ of two key themes: oscillatory switches framed by seasonality, and ‘schismogenesis’. He calls these ‘doing seasons’ and ‘doing difference’. Doing seasons without ‘unruly switching’, Hai//om indigenous voice critiques the structuralist/dualist seasonal perspective in #TheDawnofEverything ‘coloured by agricultural folks in the high latitude zones’. Life histories collected from Hai//om seniors also provide the opposite of ‘doing difference’ – that is, ‘undoing difference’, when they describe living with !Xû neighbours as ‘children of one woman’.

Faced with the prospect of larger audience, the Romantics decided that they would be the writers who would not engage in such vulgarity. Their work was to champion individual experiences to be savoured, not to churn out penny dreadfuls with mass appeal! #Schismogenesis strikes again…

On X, all of this is impossible. Whenever someone is banned, regardless of their political alignment, there always follows cries of deplatforming, censorship, and so on. Even if it's someone whose politics we totally disagree with, the worst thing one can do is fall into the trap of #schismogenesis, and say that the ban was a good thing. A jailor should not become your vanguard just because they have the unaccountable power to ban someone you don't like.

I’m conflicted about this.

I learned the term #schismogenesis, which essentially boils down to: “they hate it, we love it!”

Personally, I’ve been a believer in #PointAndLaugh at the #AntiNormie.

But, does it have the opposite tribal effect than intended?

There's been significant crossover of physicists into cancer biology - e.g. Paul Davies.

Here @davidwengrow is developing his work w. Graeber, re. Bateson, in a way that should appeal to physicists ..
