I don't know if it's somehow fitting that Europe's only samurai museum is in Berlin, but I'm glad it is, because I'm only a short tram ride away from some incredible sights! I visited the Samurai Museum this weekend with my son and we were both blown away. The museum itself is a very modern space, with a mix of more than 4000 authentic items filling 1500 square metres over two floors. My favourite piece was probably the beetle helmet (amazing!), and the AI-tweaked photos of me and my son as samurai warriors. He looks like Daniel Craig! 😂 The samurai suits belong to Peter Janssen, a lifelong Japan obsessive and collector who opened the Samurai Museum in 2022. The armour is all displayed in well-lit cases, alongside various masks and weapons and mascot-like motifs. In all, you'll find around 200 helmets, 1500 masks and 160 swords, amongst hundreds of smaller items and sculptures. There's also a number of multimedia areas, projecting the history of Japan's samurai era in vivid detail, complete with animations and sound effects for a super high-quality result.
