Brooke van Velden's road cone tipline has proved to be an unmitigated flop. The Green Party OIAed all road controlling authorities to ask how many road cones had been removed as a result of tips.

The answer is 204. A total of 271 tips were received, in five months over the whole of the country.

"In Whanganui, information from the tipline had actually led to more cones being put out than taken away."

Somebody cleverer than me will work out the cost per cone of this cynical exercise in distraction.

One man And His Cone.

There is a late night sport in Glasgow (usually conducted after a couple of drinks) of placing road cones on the top of statues. This one of the Duke of Wellington in Royal Exchange Square is now so well known for being adorned in this manner that it has become an unofficial symbol of the city.
