Nick Pope died in April 2026 at the age of 60, following a battle with advanced oesophageal cancer. In the final weeks of his life, he continued to engage with the media and the public, still answering questions and still exploring the unknown. Born in 1965 in England, Pope entered the Ministry of Defence in 1985, beginning what would become a 21-year career in government service. His most famous posting came between 1991 and 1994, when he was assigned to Secretariat (Air Staff) Sec (AS) 2a, better known as the Ministry’s “UFO desk.” There, he investigated sightings of unidentified aerial phenomena and assessed whether they posed any threat to national security or aviation safety.

He also wrote fiction, including the science fiction novels Operation Thunder Child and Operation Lightning Strike, and later expanded into the political thriller Blood Brothers.

In addition to his writing, Pope contributed to film and television as a consultant and writer, helping shape documentaries and productions such as Aliens at the Pentagon, After Contact, and Aliens from the Abyss. His work reflected a lifelong fascination not only with UFOs, but also with the broader cultural, scientific, and philosophical questions they provoke.

Despite his association with the extraordinary, Pope was measured in his conclusions. In fact, some argue that November 30th marks the spiritual “shift” from the waning warmth of autumn to the dead of winter, a time when the barrier between the living and the dead grows thinnest. This has been linked to a number of ghost sightings on this date throughout history.

One famous case involves the haunting of the old Boston University building, where on the night of November 30th, 1979, several students reported hearing strange noises in the empty hallways, including footsteps and doors slamming shut.
