Of course, the next morning it was pretty solid. Not too dissimilar to a block of firm tofu.

I the container's contents in half, then cut up the half I was trying into little cubes.

I figured micorwaving as-is would mummify it into inedibility, so I added some water and kept cutting/mixing it until it seemed wet enough to survive reheating.

The taste? Fine. Just like fresh!

The texture? Better than I expected, but not quite like fresh. Pribably would be nicer if I could use milk or cream with it, but that's a hard pass given my allergies.

Still … good enough.

Success! 🙂

But then …

In the end I figured I can't really guess how cold porridge will turn out, I just need to experiment and see if I can make it work.

I grabbed one of my #rediscovered glass freezer containers and packed in the leftover #porridge. It fit perfectly!

After it cooled a bit, I realised the seals for the plastic lids had either gotten lost or disintegrated, but a stretchy hairband* solved the lid problem.

I popped it in the fridge overnight to see what could be done with it.

*Allergic to #latex, so I use knitted polyester hairbands from dollar stores instead. Hairbraid-sized ones are good for nearly every typical #ElastIcBand purpose, and the larger ones used to hold back an entire head of hair are similarly useful for much bigger items!

And so, dear readers, I am delighted to announce that I have successfully made myself homemade #porridge for over a month now.

It is delicious. It is #nutritious. It is easy to add things to change it up a bit, such as spices or fruit.

The one challenge/opportunity is that the recipe my family member passed to me makes enough for three LJLP (LikelyJanLukas Portion) servings.

The idea of cold porridge didn't exactly sound thrilling to me. Nor did reducing the recipe ingredient portions, as while #cooking with the #RiceCooker is easy, sometimes #cleaning it is challenging (primarily when I have to rush to an appointment or am having a #JellyFish day where I cannot stay standing for very long).

Considering this problem, I wondered whether the additional portions could be re-heated and still be palatable? #MouthFeel is important to me and whilst I will choke down something I can't stand the texture of, two out of three breakfasts like that would be miserable.

What to do?

What's the Earliest the Moon Could Have Formed?

Astronomers are pretty sure they know where the Moon came from. In the early Solar System, a Mars-sized object dubbed Theia smashed into Earth. This cataclysmic collision knocked a huge mass of material into orbit, which coalesced and cooled into the Moon. But establishing exactly when this occurred is a difficult task. At the 55th … Continue reading "What's the Earliest the Moon Could Have Formed?"

I had a takeaway last night with sticky rice. When I reheated the rice this morning in the microwave, it went really solid and crunchy like toast. I normally reheat (non-sticky) rice in the microwave for 2.5-3 minutes so it's really hot, to avoid food poisoning. Did I overdo the re-heating? Is there a special technique I should have used? Or is reheating sticky rice just a bad idea? #microwave #rice #reheating #cooking
