Time to dust off my bike and start riding again. (Well, not just dust off, but make sure things are clean, tires are up, etc.). Once the water tank at the #CommunityGarden gets filled up (they really should get a #rainbarrel, which I had suggested), I can just ride my bike over and water and weed! With plush pal Phil the Baphomet in tow.

TODAY! #PeconicNY - #EnvironmentalExpo and #RepairCafé at Southold Recreation Center

May 2 @ 12:00 pm – 4:00 pm
Peconic Recreation Center
920 Peconic Lane
Peconic, NY 11958 United States

"Southold Town is holding an Environmental Expo and Repair Café with the North Fork Environmental Council (#NFEC) on Saturday, May 2 from Noon to 4 p.m. at the town’s Peconic Lane Recreation Center.

" 'The NFEC has been coordinating repair cafés twice a year, and that will be incorporated into the event. We will also have a #composter sale pickup at the same time,' Ms. Van Eysden told the Town Board at the March 10 work session.

"At the NFEC’s Repair Cafés, the public can bring their household items — including small appliances, clothing, toys and bicycles to be repaired, and their knives to be sharpened.

" 'It’s a great community event, with neighbors helping neighbors to make things work again, with the added bonus of keeping those things out of the waste stream,' said Margaret deCruz, the NFEC Repair Café chair.

"Southold’s Waste Management department has been participating in a discounted compost bin and #RainBarrel sale program for the past year. The sale, open to Southold Town residents (other neighboring towns also have similar programs) is currently underway, online here, and residents can pick up their bins and barrels at the Expo.

" 'The reduction of food waste from backyard composting is a critical component in solving the regional solid waste crisis currently facing #LongIsland,' said Southold Town Solid Waste Coordinator Nick Krupski.

"Numerous environmental organizations will also have tables at the event. Compost coaches from the Long Island Organics council will give demonstrations and offer tips on how best to compost at home, and organizations ranging from Group for the East End to the #PeconicBaykeeper, #PeconicEstuary Partnership, #ReWild North Fork and UpSculpt will also offere information and inspiration on how to preserve our local natural resources."

A DIY #RainBarrel system waiting. The garbage cans, bungee cords, and screening material work so well together that I'm not bothering to "upgrade." Eventually, they'll all be right-side up with the downspout redirected over top.

(Edited for spelling)

Well, I just emailed our Town Manager with information about discount #RainBarrel and #Composter programs. I know one of our neighbors (who is on the Selectboard) had mentioned how composters cut down on the amount of garbage, and how many folks have home gardens and could benefit from both rainbarrels and composters! Local #SolarPunk vibes!

How to Set Up a #RainwaterCollection System & 8 #DIY Ideas

Written by Author Lindsay Sheehan Published on March 26, 2021

"This technology can be traced back some 12,000 years in human history, and it makes just as much sense today to take advantage of a precious resource that freely falls from above.

The simplest #RainwaterHarvesting system involves a basic #RainBarrel situated next to your home.

Gutters made from coated aluminum and vinyl are the best choice for rainwater collection. Galvanized steel gutters are suitable for non-potable systems.

Avoid using gutters made with copper or lead materials."

How to Set Up a Rainwater Collection System & 8 DIY Ideas

Rainwater harvesting is the ancient practice of collecting and storing precipitation for later use. Setups can range from simple to the amazingly complex.

Rural Sprout
From #rainbarrel to water pump to sprinkler. Seeding the yard with #Ecolawn fescue. It looks a lot like grass when trimmed but doesn't require nearly as much watering (only watering now to help the new seed)
@keladrystan Scooping out the larvae from a #rainbarrel is an option too. That's what I've been doing lately using a fine mesh scoop.

Taking a break to water the plants using #rainwater. Keeping one's #RainBarrel clean is essential to having good rainwater! And I've found that if mosquitoes are an issue, a light layer of olive oil (I save old, rancid olive oil for this purpose) can smother mosquito larvae. Natural dish soap does the same thing, without causing harm to plants.

Now, this article mentions using goldfish in one's rainbarrel. Ummmm... But, vegetable oils and natural soap will work (and so would #BTDunks )!
