The invasive species Zelus renardii, or leaf hopper assasin bug known in Spain as the American assassin bug, is a predatory insect of many insect species. At first glance it looks harmless and barely measures 12 mm, but the photos show why it is so called. You can see how it uses its proboscis to pierce the abdomen of its prey and suck its fluids. A primera vista tiene un aspecto inofensivo y apena mide 12 mm, pero las fotos muestran porqué se la llama así. Auf den ersten Blick sieht sie harmlos aus und ist nur 12 mm lang, aber die Fotos zeigen, warum sie so genannt wird. Aunque en realidad, la flor de ruellia sobre la está posada tampoco es autóctona.

Diese Wanze sollte nicht hier sein. In Europa ist Zelus renardii (Nymphe), die so genannte Blatttrichter-Attentäter-Käfer, trotz ihrer geringen Größe eine räuberische invasive Art, die in Amerika heimisch ist und die heimische Fauna bedroht. Aber in der Tat ist die Ruellia-Blume, auf der sie sitzt, auch nicht heimisch.

Zelus renardii, o chinche asesina americana., es un insecto depredador de muchas especies de insectos. Su habitat nativo es el oeste de Norteamérica y Centroamérica pero se ha extendido como especie invasora a Europa y otras partes del mundo.

Zelus renardii, in Amerika als leaf hopper assasin bug bekannt, ist ein räuberisches Insekt, das viele Insektenarten befällt. Ihr ursprünglicher Lebensraum ist das westliche Nord- und Mittelamerika, aber sie hat sich als invasive Art in Europa und anderen Teilen der Welt ausgebreitet. In Spanien ist sie als Amerikanische Attentäter Wanze bekannt. Dieses Exemplar habe ich in Valencia fotografiert.
