Brought Rehearsing A #City For All, edited by Silvia Bottiroli, back from a visit to the Venice Biennale last week – as you do.

Particularly taken by Bottiroli’s idea of #public space ‘not as a site but rather as a subject with #agency and therefore a collaborator for any intervention’ we might wish to imagine’ (p.10).

Interesting, too, because it rather contrasts my refusal in the chapter on ‘How to Redesign a City’ in Masked Media, ‘to present the city itself, in all its complexity and #pluriversality as an intelligent #inhuman actor’. The reason being that the kinds of cities my collaborators and I are trying to imagine not already exist. Rather, the challenge is to invent the conditions and contexts out of which they might emerge.

The future lies in #pluriversality. Either you resist it or become part of it. We saw the toppling of a hegemonic dynasty this week, there is more to come.

Language constructs our reality and existence; it is not something we can part ways with. Designing the politics, politics of #typography.

Zohran delivered his campaign speech in three other languages, including Hindi/Urdu, Spanish and Arabic. West loves to talk about inclusion, diversity and equality, but delivers the bare minimum. If you want to see the equality in your workspace or neighbourhood, look at who picks up your trash, cleans your floor and toilets.

In case you are wondering what his name means, 'Zohran' signifies light, 'Kwame' connects to Ghanaian heritage and resistance, and 'Mamdani' denotes a legacy of scholars.

What an impressive set of #tech #design principles Nathan Schneider presents as the framework for his "Governable Spaces" book (https://nathanschneider.info/books/governable-spaces/):

  • Aníbal Quijano: "...search for holistic cross-cultural knowledge that welcomes difference and refuses domination;

  • Arturo Escobar: #pluriversality "...no single design can serve all people... design as an exercise in historical consciousness and multiplicity" and #decoloniality "a form of resistance to being designed from elsewhere."

  • #DesignJustice: "design must occur through rigorous accountability to the people whose lives it will shape."

... and more!
