Sorry to have missed Screen Melancholy by artist Li Yi-Fan and curator Raphael Fonseca at the #VeniceBiennale.

Hopefully it will tour.

‘It explores the complex, layered relationship between individuals and “images” in the visual-first generation. This relationship encompasses how people receive and create images. Through the character in the video, I encourage viewers to “learn how to make animation!” As a cautionary warning, it suggests that understanding how images are produced is essential to grasp the power mechanism behind them.’

Since we decided this exhibition would be called Screen Melancholy: Li Yi-Fan, we spoke at length about the many interpretations this sequence of words might evoke.

"Pussy Riot commandeered the unveiling of the 61st #VeniceBiennale last month, chanting from behind pink balaclavas and popping off multicolored smoke bombs in front of the #Russia n pavilion, protesting the pariah empire’s return to the world’s largest #art #exhibition"

Brought Rehearsing A #City For All, edited by Silvia Bottiroli, back from a visit to the Venice Biennale last week – as you do.

Particularly taken by Bottiroli’s idea of #public space ‘not as a site but rather as a subject with #agency and therefore a collaborator for any intervention’ we might wish to imagine’ (p.10).

Interesting, too, because it rather contrasts my refusal in the chapter on ‘How to Redesign a City’ in Masked Media, ‘to present the city itself, in all its complexity and #pluriversality as an intelligent #inhuman actor’. The reason being that the kinds of cities my collaborators and I are trying to imagine not already exist. Rather, the challenge is to invent the conditions and contexts out of which they might emerge.
