I was not previously aware of Justice Harlan "The Great Dissenter" 's prescient dissent on Plessy: "the judgement this day rendered, will, in time, prove to be quite as pernicious as the decision made by this tribunal in the Dred Scott Case" https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Marshall_Harlan #JohnMarshallHarlan #DredScott #PlessyVFerguson

I missed this a few years ago. I regularly lecture about Homer Plessy and his work in 1892 to fight racial segregation in the American South. His work backfired when the Supreme Court immortalized him with their disastrous Plessy v Ferguson decision enshrining racial segregation as constitutional. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-59888947 #segregation #CivilRights #JimCrow #PlessyVFerguson #HomerPlessy #SCOTUS
Homer Plessy: Pardon for 'separate but equal' civil rights figure

Homer Plessy's arrest 130 years ago led to one of the most criticised Supreme Court decisions in US history.

On this day in 1896 Plessy v. Ferguson, 163 U.S. 537 (1896), was a landmark decision of the United States Supreme Court in which the Court ruled that racial segregation laws did not violate the U.S. Constitution as long as the facilities for each race were equal in quality, a doctrine that came to be known as "separate but equal". The decision legitimized the many state laws re-establishing racial segregation that had been passed in the American South after the end of the Reconstruction Era (1865–1877).

There are many, many more but I just got tired of typing hashtags. See Legacy Museum, Montgomery, Ala., for a more complete list of crap decisions

I'm enjoying the addition of the history segment at the start.

"We have an important history entry for today. On this day in 1954 #SCOTUS held, in Brown v. Board of Education, that racial segregation of children in public schools was unconstitutional. The case overturned the previous doctrine of ‘separate but equal’ established by Plessy v. Ferguson. … History segregation is, ancient history it is not. “
