I would not consider Pitäjänmäki the most picturesque neighborhood in Helsinki. But I am very pleased with this photo.

Exploring the neighborhoods of Pitäjänmäki, Etelä-Haaga, and Pohjois-Haaga on January 22nd – another overcast day with light snowfall. At first I was not keen on taking photos but then I reminded myself that a good photographer can take amazing photos in dreary weather and mundane surroundings. Less excuses, more photos. At least the temperature (-5C) was excellent.

I wouldn't call myself a good photographer but I was pleasantly surprised that I actually got a few photos I like. Trains, the sad aftermath of Christmas (In recent years, I've become quite uncomfortable with our Christmas tree tradition.), quiet streets and so on. Overall, the walk was definitely worth the hassle.

"What? Is that the sun? Here? In November? It is actually peeking through the clouds, maybe for about 30 seconds. Find some kind of composition now! Hmm, that dead plant will have to do."

I mustered enough energy to go for a photo walk through the Pitäjänmäki and Tali neighborhoods in Helsinki yesterday. The city is not pretty in November so I took a few "ugly" photos of dilapidated buildings and empty streets on purpose. It's November after all – our "death month". Then I tried to look for small details in the environment. I found some snowberries and mushrooms near the Mätäjoki brook. I started following it downstream towards the sea and remembered a tree which was home to tawny owls in March. I hadn't been there since. Maybe one of them was still there... Well, the day did not feel so gloomy after seeing a familiar face :)

I went for another casual evening stroll, this time through the Pitäjänmäki, Pajamäki and Vermo neighborhoods in Helsinki and Espoo. The weather was mostly sunny and somewhat warm today. I spotted some wild pansies – classic beauties – growing on cliffs. A while later I spotted myself in a window.

Damn, there is so much to see and photograph in the spring. I wish I had more time...

After finishing Saturday chores I went for an evening walk around the neighborhood. The weather is getting warmer, and the snow we got two days ago is thankfully gone now. I hope I don't see more snow until November. But now that I have said that, it'll probably snow in May 😮‍💨

Some of the photos I took today turned out okayish. Streets and people before and after sunset. A Norway maple seedling rising from leaf litter. I saw four Eurasian curlews and even managed to get my first photo of them. Sure, they are just silhouettes in the sky, but I like the photo. The setting sun however… I tried to get a good photo of the sunset, but unfortunately I was not able to find any neat compositions before the sun went below the treeline. Oh well, maybe next time.
