"'They are not going to come back': The dark reality of SF's pharmacy crisis

Over the past 10 years, at least 64 pharmacies have closed across the city, a sweeping trend that’s affecting all of the big chains. Walgreens, which used to have stores practically next door in some neighborhoods, now has only 29 locations in San Francisco, compared with about 53 stores in 2021. CVS has only 11 pharmacies throughout the city, or about half as many as it had in 2021. And last month, Rite Aid said it will likely shutter all of its California locations following a second bankruptcy filing. Driven by a range of factors, the crisis is also leaving independent neighborhood pharmacies struggling to stay afloat.
