@matttutt it's a fair and important question.

I've always worked in tech, but often resent it. Certainly it is linked to a lot of destruction.

Maybe we should look at the most sustainable tech, #permacomputing etc and ask whether it is sustainable enough? (I may stretching the use of sustainable, either it can be sustained without degrading external systems or it can't)

Discovered this little device from this article [https://www.generationamiga.com/2026/05/16/solar-powered-orion-pda-reimagines-the-classic-handheld-computer-for-2026/] here, and thought it was quite interesting. The creator also shows his prototype working in this video [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uCrfgu6vQew] (though oddly decided to use a generated voice instead of his own), and was particularly surprised how well it plays video. I quite like the simplicity that it’s going for, hearkening back to classic PDA’s of the 90’s.

So this is what I was at last night - fixing Psion Series 7 & Netbook computers. Look at my nice surgical soldering field - repairing a blown Series 7 motherboard - nice job! My cheap spares-repairs ebay purchase had a netbook personality module, so I upgraded my workhorse machine. @tomjennings @permacomputer I totally agree with your statement! Oh, how were the wonders when the machine did exactly the things it was told to do and nothing else. How wonderful the time one could understand the computer in front of them completely. It still could surprise you, but every surprise was explainable.

Letní škola digitální soběstačnosti

Digitální soběstačnost se vzhledem ke spojenectví amerického Big Techu a Trumpovy administrativy stává stále naléhavější otázkou, na kterou ale v evropském ani uměleckém kontextu zatím nemáme tak úplně odpověď. Anebo máme?

Letní škola je určena široké dospělé veřejnosti se zájmem o demokratický internet. V rámci letní školy účastnictvo prozkoumá existující alternativní webové služby, které nezneužívají naše data. Bude odmetat, degooglovat a prozkoumávat decentralizované sociální sítě ve fediverse. Dozví se o feministických serverech, artist run datacentrech a jejich službách. Účastníci a účastnice si nainstalují lokální open source software. Podívají se na permacomputing. Nainstalují linux na starý notebook nebo smartphone. Zrecyklují, vdechnou nový život. A pokud vše půjde dobře, založí na nich svůj vlastní komunitní server nebo home-server. Poskytnou tak webové služby sobě, svému přátelstvu, nebo prostě komukoliv na webu. sudo su! V rámci letní školy se účastnictvo zaměří na design webových služeb pro veřejnost. I na kreativní způsoby odporu proti extrakci dat a dohledu. Tak trochu škola, tak trochu hackathon, tak trochu self-hosting jam. Think global, serve local. Say no to the tech bro.
