Kia ora all. #advice request: if I’m starting my cover letter for a job application with a shortened version of my #pepeha in #TeReoMāori and it takes up half the first page,
1. Do you think this is a good idea
2. Is 2.5 pages too long for a cover letter? I can’t seem to cut it down.

This website will help you create your pepeha (introduction) in te reo Māori!

Ka rawe!

edit: Shared because I found it a fun and interesting tool, but pls be mindful about the nuances and cultural implications of the way we talk about our origins and connections to land and ancestry.
Really interesting discussion happening in the replies here.

Pepeha

Pepeha is a way of introducing yourself in Māori. It tells a story of the places and people you are connected to.

Pepeha

In other news... I'm not going anywhere or doing anything majorly important in public, where I'd have to introduce myself, but I still think about working on my #pepeha, just so I have myself... Positioned properly, y'know?

This template looks decent. Anyone got any other resources?

Pepeha for non-Māori | E-Tangata

“I believe that it’s inappropriate for non-Māori people to use the same pepeha as tangata whenua. It is not a matter of mere opinion, of like or dislike, of right or wrong: it simply doesn’t make sense. It is a matter of indigeneity.” — Keri Opai.

I just stumbled on this article about why tangata whenua use a pepeha and what it means to them, and offers advice for how Pākeha can confidently use one in public life:

A Pepehā is a #Māori custom, used to introduce yourself by talking about landmarks near where live, and where your ancestors are from.

Someone on here (sorry can't remember who!!) was asking about creating pepeha as Paakehaa, specially they were asking about how to link to areas of geographic significance. May I offer a series of templates that I, as Paakehaa have found useful for introducing myself - without inappropriately appropriating a whakapapa that is not mine to claim.

The first template: pepeha for paakehaa and tauiwi
