The reason we treat our #sidewalks like highways is because we treat our streets like highways.
Get rid of the fucking cars. There would be plenty of room for strolling, if not for the fucking noisy #idiotboxes taking up too much space and #polluting the air.

You know what's cool? Pedestrian bridges over the river delta going out to the sea onto a little island in the middle of a city, completely closed from car traffic.
Photo from 2011, but still holds true.
Because we can make urban areas safer for all from car drivers, especially school areas.

OMG I just had a visceral flashback to watching my young son climbing a snowbank to push the walk signal button on a busy/snowy street as I ran to catch up with him to help. And the cars just kept swishing by despite poor sight lines.
These things are terrible for everyone, but yes, accessibility nightmare is right
