Nike has made an expansive effort to convince consumers, investors and others that it is improving the lives of factory workers who make its products, not exploiting them. A rare view of wages at one Cambodian factory tests this claim.

On 2 March 2020, as the Covid-19 pandemic hit Cambodia, the entire workforce of the Hulu Garment factory was sent home in a lockdown. While Cambodian law specified that during the pandemic factories had to pay workers 40% of their wages, the factory initially let workers fend for themselves. Late in April, workers were summoned to the factory to finally sign their payslips, under which the factory hid a sentence saying the workers were resigning.
Unions and labour rights organisations worked together to set up a solution that would hold brands accountable to ensure that their workers would be paid during future crises, such as the climate crisis workers are already on the frontlines of.
We turned to many brands but no one showed interest. The unions attempted to engage with adidas, which they felt could be the first signatory of such an agreement. But adidas kept them on a leash, and wasted their time. (2/3)
The pandemic is a time many of us would rather forget, but we can’t forget about the thousands of garment workers who are still feeling the fallout.
This week marks 5 years since the pandemic was declared. Garment workers were among those who paid the highest price. While brands pulled orders to save their profits, workers were left without wages or jobs. Many of them are still fighting for the wages or severance they didn't receive during this time of crisis.
